KC Power 18 Red earns Liberty bid at Asics MLK

Two bids were in play in Kansas City with the Asics MLK 18s Qualifier. A couple of teams from our coverage area came up just short with Mizuno Club North 18 Ang finishing 3rd and Mavs KC 18-2 in 5th. The gold ball and bid went to [program_tooltip program_id='430200' first='KC' last='Power'] 18 Red, joining the 18 Black team as April participants in the Girls Juniors National Championships in Baltimore.   Power went 8-1 over the weekend losing their only match to the Mavs KC 18-2 team we mentioned earlier. The Kansas-based team had little trouble in their first two matches to begin pool play on day one, before scratching out a 15-13 three-set win in their final match over UEPA 18D. [player_tooltip player_id='119712' first='Shannon' last='Frakes'] did a good job of spreading the ball around on the day.   Day two started with the defeat at the hands of the Mavs. They were able to get wins in the next two contests to grab a second-place finish in their pool with Mavs going 3-0. The second-place showing was good enough to give them a spot in the gold bracket. 18 Red got good offensive play from [player_tooltip player_id='216375' first='Brynn' last='Stowell'] and [player_tooltip player_id='261103' first='Ava' last='Anderson'].   To open bracket play, a three-set win over Oklahoma Peak 17-1 was how the day started. After a commanding first-set victory, the Oklahoma team returned the favor by running away with the second. [player_tooltip player_id='119810' first='Anna' last='Laincz'] and company collected themselves after a tough battle and got the next match done in two over Club North. This win would guarantee a bid but after coming this far, the gold ball was the next thing to mark off the goals for the weekend.   The championship match would be against the same UEPA team they went three sets with on day one and this would look a little different in the rematch. The earlier match was very tight in the opening two sets. This time around Power would jump out to a good lead and not let up, winning it 25-17. UEPA found their mojo in the second and returned the favor, beating their opponent easily 25-15. The final stanza is what you expected and want in a final match with both team trading blows with swings and big defensive plays but Power won the race to 15, finishing it 15-12.
