, Outside hitter for MoCo Mavs 16 Red is a surprise treat. She may not be the biggest in size, but her energy, effort, and swing are leveled with big competitors. Abigail transitions well, is consistently putting herself in position to be an offensive option. Her swing is strong, but her true strength is found in her ability to read the defense and attack the holes on the defending side. Swing, tip, or roll, Abigail is going to attack it with intent to score.

When she got going, Powell was probably the most impressive offensive player on the court. Adjusting to different setters in just a couple of hours can be tricky, but when she got that sorted out, opponents had no answer for her at the net. Big and physical, Powell presented a wide variety of shots at the pin and was able to put a lot of power into them, making it impossible for opposing defenders to control the heavy balls she was sending across the net. Powell also appeared well with her blocking, getting stops in 1v1 plays at the pin.

Powell was among the most exciting freshmen to emerge in the Houston area in the recently ended high school season, producing huge numbers with Hargrave and showing she can play with the best. She’s a very interesting offensive weapon, playing aggressively at the net and using her length to make contact with the ball at a very high point. Powell has solid firepower in her right arm, but what makes her offense so effective is the precision she’s able to put into her swings. The pin hitter also handles her backcourt duties smoothly, passing efficiently and making strong plays on defense.

Powell was moved to Hagrave’s varsity squad right after the start of the season and is proving she belongs there with solid performances. Her size is a nice asset for her team at the net, especially because of how well she uses it on offense, making contact with the ball at a high point and swinging it with great precision to score. Powell does a good job on defense, benefiting from her positioning to get touches, and is getting more and more confident with her passing.
