Class 1A
North Butler and Winfield-Mount Union have cracked into the top 15 for the Class 1A rankings with a record of 9-1 and 7-2. Both of these squads have history in basketball and volleyball where their trophy cases are filled with North Butler in the mid 2000s and Winfield-Mount Union in the late 90s. and are now bringing it back in 2019. North Butler is led by Sydney Eiklenborg and Cassidy Staudt, who have combined for over 130 kills so far. Winfield-Mount Union brings a squad with only one Senior, and is led by Jenna Buffington who is averaging over four kills per set.
Class 2A
The season is still young, and only one team was new this past week in the top 15 which was Cascade. Cascade is sandwiched between plenty of volleyball powerhouses and has Beckman minutes from them. Abby Welter leads the team with over 100 kills, good for over three per set. Their only losses are to Waterloo East and Dubuque Senior.
Class 3A
No surprise to see Des Moines Christian in the top 15. All around athletes back from a team who had 25 wins in 2018, the Lions are looking to make some noise this year. Megan Riddle and Alyson Dexter lead the way and have combined for 100 kills in only four matches so far.
Class 4A
Marion went from unranked to being number eight with a 6-2 record. St. Louis commit Delaney Rice leads the way with nearly three kills per set so far where she is long, athletic and can attack out of any spot in the front row. Their two setters in Avery Verhook, who is only a Freshman and Elise Mehaffy have been dishing to a well-balanced attack. Marion was able to knock off the former number one team in Class 3A in Mount Vernon in a 3-2 victory.
Despite a 4-5 record, Western Dubuque has cracked into the top fifteen after playing a rigorous schedule to start the year. Two Sophomores in Meredith Bahl and Maddie Harris lead the way in attacking, while Madison Maahs already has over 200 assists. Most recently at a tournament with City High, they were able to snag wins over Centennial, Bettendorf, and City High.
Class 5A
With Jada Wills transferring from Hempstead to Beckman, there were some question marks as to how Hempstead would replace an All-State outside hitter. With a 5-2 start and a whole lot of Junior attackers, the Mustangs are off to a 5-2 start. Corinne Meier has 80 kills to start and is definitely a 2021 outside hitter on the rise with her strength, athleticism, and physicality.
New coach, graduating a large chunk of the starters, and haven’t had a winning record since 2012, another team to add to the list of contenders in the Cedar Valley is Waterloo West. The Wahawks haven’t been ranked since 2006 and with new transfer Avery Kroll who has committed to NCAA Division 2, Northern State as well as big contributions from Lauren Conrey and Gabby Moore along with some upcoming talent in Sahara Williams and Jaeda Gieser.
