What To Do With The Mini-Break Between High School and Club?
Awards have been handed out, banquets are finishing up, the post tryout rumor mills are starting to settle down with athletes committing to their teams for the upcoming club season. But what now?
Rest
I know this isn’t always an option for some athletes who have started basketball practice, but making sure that athletes are taking care of themselves mentally and physically is incredibly important. The club season is a grind and heading into the season with any nagging injuries is the last thing athletes want. Schedule those visits to a doctor, physical therapy, or whatever needs to happen in order to healthy before the club season. Rest doesn’t always mean a Netflix or now a Disney + binge. Athletes can still be active, but still, rest. A yoga class, a hike, or doing a quick training run to join your family for a Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 5k that will be a good way to stay active, but yet give yourself a rest.
Video, Email, Visit, Follow Up
Getting video together following the high school season is essential when making a highlight video to send to colleges. When contacting college coaches via email, having a video is a must. Athletes can list their accolades, stats, and every activity they are involved in, but coaches need to see what the athlete is bringing to their volleyball ability. Make sure the email is personalized where you mention something about their particular program and college/university. For athletes in the Class of 2022 and 2023 you can email Division 1 college programs, they just cannot respond directly regarding your recruiting process, however they can send information regarding a camp. Visit college campuses wherever and whenever, some could even be a quick drive through to see what it looks like while others may be more official set up through admissions or the volleyball program. Keep the coaches posted on your club schedule as well as updated video.
