Here’s the Power 5 outside hitting arms in the Class of 2022.
Ava Brizard Ava Brizard 6'0" | OH Marian | 2022 State #16 Nation MI , Marian/Michigan Elite
Brizard was our top player in our initial Class of 2022 rankings and she hasn’t done anything to lose that spot. The 6-foot power arm plays with a fire you don’t often see and it leads to a lot of powerful kills at the net. Brizard has a chip on her shoulder and that has carried over to a tremendous all-around game that includes one of the fiercest swings in the state. Brizard put down over 530 kills last fall while hitting an impressive .368 in the process for the Mustangs. Her continued develop during the 2020 club season should lead to a 2020 fall season full of highlight finishes.
Maradith O’Gorman Maradith O’Gorman 6'2" | RS Lakewood | 2022 State #24 Nation MI , Lakewood/FaR Out
O’Gorman stands 6’2” and has been an impactful player in her first two seasons of prep action. Paired with her sister in the middle, Aubrey O’Gorman Aubrey O’Gorman 6'3" | MB Lakewood | 2021 State MI , and Lakewood has a nearly unstoppable 1-2 punch. Maradith has proven to be more than just a 6’2” hitter. She has improved footwork and passing over the last couple of years to pair with her devastating swings at the net. A great leap combined with her size, and its difficult to stop O’Gorman’s attacks when she’s locked in. Already a Michigan State commit, she will have the Vikings as a Division 2 contender again in 2020.
Aly Borellis, Notre Dame Prep/Michigan Elite
Borellis is a complete player in every sense of the word. Though she can be a powerful outside hitter, she also can play setter. There’s nothing this 2022 prospect can’t do. She’s also played in a number of big matches in her short career, making her the ultimate competitor. While Borellis doesn’t have the same size as some of her outside peers in this class (5’10”), she finishes with the best of them. This past fall season, Borellis came up just shy of 600 kills while hitting .460 for the Irish. She also led the team in assists.
Sydney Tomlak Sydney Tomlak 5'11" | OH Stoney Creek | 2022 State #116 Nation MI , Stoney Creek/Legacy
Syndey Tomlak“Squid” as she is called by her varsity coach Ross Talbott has been emerging as one of the stronger hitters in this class the last two years. Tomlak has taken on a big role with Stoney Creek that is only going to get larger in 2020. Her run with Legacy this club season was also a big step forward, as she has been the team’s go-to, six-rotation option. Tomlak put down 327 kills during the 2019 prep season, but the Cougars had a veteran outside in Kate Stration Kate Stration 5'7" | OH Stoney Creek | 2020 State MI to take on most of the swings. This fall should be Tomlak’s chance to really show what she can do.
Ellia Sechrist Ellia Sechrist 5'10" | OH Walled Lake Central | 2022 MI , Walled Lake Central/Team Detroit
Sechrist has been able to make the most out of opportunities she has gotten at Walled Lake Central and with Team Detroit. The 6’1” outside has been an improved blocker and server, which pairs nicely with her ability to finish at the net. Sechrist jumped up her hitting percentage by a wide margin in 2019 and the trend should continue this fall. Her leap and size make her a powerful swinger that will be hard for anyone in the Lakes Valley Conference to stop.
