Class of ’23 DS Options From Indiana

Enter the defensive specialist, the last line of defense, the first contact on any team. We have plenty in the Hoosier State, but getting a hold of the right DS is key to long-lasting success. We list a few below.

[player_tooltip player_id="85901" first="Reese" last="Baker"], 5-4, DS, Munciana 15 Quora, Wapahani High School

Reese has been one the best receivers for Munciana’s 15-1 team this season and Wapahani, and has proved it against the top competition in the country. She’s also relentless and a great teammate, making her addition necessary for a floor general. At WHS, she’s a primary-passing outside, and helped lead her team to the state championship this past fall.

[player_tooltip player_id="85914" first="Ramsey" last="Gary"], 5-5, DS, Munciana 15 Quora, Pendleton Heights High School

Zero errors. Relentless. Always in the right spot, and a true winner. Even though Ramsey doesn’t live in Delaware County (read: from a traditional Muncie-area volleyball powerhouse), she’s still the best thing to come out of PHHS for volleyball. Predominantly a basketball school, PHHS stole some wins this year specifically because of Miss Gary. I am surprised that she’s still available at this point.

Tess Hawkings-Wilding, 5-5, DS, Team Indiana Elite 15, Zionsville High School

Although listed as a setter primarily, Tess will most likely pan out to be a solid DS for any school looking for a no-nonsense winner. Also playing in the same MEPL circuit as the two ladies above, her TI 15-1s were playing great ball against top competition before the shutdown occurred. She’s received very little interest thus far, making her a must-see recruit.

[player_tooltip player_id="85915" first="Abby" last="Herman"], 5-6, DS, Team Indiana Elite 15, Mount Vernon High School

Coached in high school by former Ball State men’s player Eric Buhlman, Abby has been surrounded by the best teachers in the game in Indiana since she started playing. This is completely apparent for her current club team, which has her as a full-time libero in this MEPL squad. Keep an eye out for this one; recent graduates from MVHS have gone on to play at Valparaiso (D1) and Indianapolis (D2).

[player_tooltip player_id="85916" first="Alexandra" last="Kraft"], 5-2, DS, Union 15 Asics, Providence High School

With all due respect to the ladies above, none can claim a state title like Miss Kraft can. This unassuming redhead is fiery between the lines and is relentless both in serve receive and on defense. Always in the right spot, her club team made multiple championship matches prior to the break due to COVID-19 this spring.
