PD SpikeFest: High Flying Offensive Threats - Part 1

At this past weekend's Prep Dig Spikefest tournament, a number of high flying attackers captured the attention of opposing teams, coaches, spectators, and of course, me. From explosive jumps to super fast arm swings, these athletes showcased not only incredible athleticism but also impressive skills and court awareness. While the competition was fierce across the 16s division, these players stood out for their ability to elevate the game and propel their team to some big wins across the 2 days of Spikefest. Christensen is a pin that does an excellent job transitioning off the net and staying available as a scoring option on nearly every play. She tracks the ball well across her shoulder in out of system situations, allowing her to remain effective even when there is chaos on the court. With the ability to attack from the middle as well as both pins, she also creates matchup challenges that are often hard for teams to adjust to. Her strong vertical also gives her the ability to play above the block, and she compliments that athleticism with a wide array of shots that keep defenders guessing. Essentially, Christensen is a consistent and versatile outside hitter that you want on your side of the net.     Schettler is a powerful outside hitter who takes big, aggressive swings while maintaining excellent control. She attacks with confidence but shows great discipline in her shot selection. She is especially valuable in out of system situations, where she remains composed and still finds ways to produce quality attacks. Her range as a hitter stands out, as she mixes in a variety of shots and has a great feel for when to use tips and pushes to keep the defense guessing.     Carrier is the "go to" outside hitter for her Havoc team who thrives when the pressure is on. She is the player her team relies on in key moments and that is because she consistently delivers. She attacks with confidence and creativity, finding ways to score whether it's powering the ball over the block, working angles around it, or using the block to her advantage by tooling defenders' hands. No matter the situation, she typically finds a way to generate her team the point. Beyond her offensive impact, she is solid defensively, bringing strong instincts and reliability to the backcourt. Carrier is the complete player who you rely on as she is always contributing on the court.     Farmen is a dynamic middle hitter who is simply fun to watch as she brings great energy and tempo to the court. Her quick feet allow her to transition efficiently and stay available in the offense, while her fast arm makes her a constant threat at the net. She does an excellent job communicating with her setter, making sure she knows when she's ready and available for the ball. And, when Farmen gets the opportunity, she delivers. Farmen's presence in the middle keeps blockers honest which can also open up the offense. Simply put, she is fast and fluid and is the spark that team's need.     Ulmer is a dominant middle hitter who couldn't be stopped this past weekend at Spikefest. Playing up an age level, she was fed the ball time and time again and impressively continued to find ways to score. Quick off her feet and in her approach, she consistently found openings and made great decisions at the net. Her presence demanded attention, yet even when opponents knew the set was coming her way, they struggled to slow her down. Her combination of quickness, court awareness, and athleticism made her the center of the offense and a force that opposing defenses had difficulty containing.     Bohrer is light on her feet, quick, and showcases excellent reactions. Combine that with her exceptional vertical, and you have the recipe for a dynamic middle. Using her athleticism and vast skill set, Bohrer made a strong impact this past weekend on both sides of the net. She is a dynamic attacker and also stands out as an exceptionally quick blocker. Bohrer is simply fun to watch as she moves with speed and explosiveness, consistently creating problems for opponents at the net.     I've watched Kettner play a few times this year, and each time I'm more impressed than the last. She is a true workhorse on the court, contributing in ways that are crucial but often go unnoticed. She consistently lines up for solid blocks, shows quickness off her feet, and provides strong off blocker defense. She also has the ability to track balls across her shoulder with precision which make her a highly effective right side hitter, routinely terminating balls and keeping defenses off balance. Her combination of reliability, athleticism, and versatility makes her a big asset to this successful SEV team.
