When I watch a libero or defensive specialist, I'm not sitting there counting digs. I'm watching everything else. I'm watching if they read the hitter correctly, if they beat the ball to the spot, and if they stay disciplined when the rally gets long. Some players can make a great play now and then. The defenders who catch my attention are the ones who make the hard plays look routine over and over again.

I also pay attention to first contact. Can they keep the ball in system? Can they handle pace? Can they stay balanced and give their setter a chance to run the offense? Those things matter. The best back-row players seem to always be around the ball. They're covering hitters, communicating with teammates, and finding ways to turn defense into offense.

[player_tooltip player_id='764727' first='Bryn' last='Belleson'] is one of those defenders who always seem to find her way to the ball. I don't know how many times this season I wrote her name down because she made a play that kept a rally going. What I liked was how under control she stayed. A big swing, an off-speed shot, or a tip. It didn't seem to matter. She did a nice job reading what hitters were trying to do and consistently gave her team a chance to stay in system. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

If there was a ball to chase down, chances are [player_tooltip player_id='742715' first='Gretah' last='Suchy'] was going after it. That's one of the first things I noticed about Gretah. She brings a lot of energy to the back row and doesn't quit on plays. I also liked how vocal she was. Good defenders do more than pass balls. They communicate, help teammates get into position, and make the court feel a little smaller for the opposing team. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='721058' first='Madelynn' last='Reinhardt'] has a way of making difficult defensive plays look pretty routine. Every time I watched Madelynn, she seemed to be in the right spot. Madelynn handles pace well, stays calm when attacks come at her, and does a strong job of directing first contact where it needs to go. Those things might not always get talked about, but setters appreciate players who make their job easier. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='997188' first='Natalie' last='VanderArk'] is a player I kept coming back to throughout the season. What stood out to me was how comfortable Natalie looked in the back row. She wasn't guessing. She was reading hitters, anticipating where the ball would go, and getting into good defensive positions. There is a difference between reacting and reading the game, and Natalie showed a lot of that this season. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='905898' first='Emily' last='Doherty'] plays defense the way you want a defensive player to. She competes for everything. I found myself noticing how many extra touches Emily created simply because she refused to give up on a play. Whether it was covering a hitter, running down a ball near the sideline, or extending a rally, Emily kept finding ways to help her team. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='643714' first='Alaina' last='Barkeim'] is the type of defender coaches love having on the court because she is reliable. You know what you're getting from Alaina every match. She works hard in serve receive, stays active in coverage, and consistently puts herself in position to make plays. The more I watched Alaina, the more I appreciated the little things she did that don't always show up in the stat sheet. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas
