Probably the strongest of the five middles listed today, Amy’s calling card is her ability to power through undisciplined blocks. She’s currently projecting to be an M2, and does best with a skilled setter that sets zero-tempo balls consistently. Her upper body strength is apparent not only in her arm swing, but in her blocking as well—-she’s a human wall that plays bigger than her 6′ frame. Her foot speed and transitional quickness needs some tweaking, but that can be done in a practice gym and in the weight room, and is easily fixable.

Broad-shouldered and strong, Amy is one of the rare natural middles in this class. Often, freshman middles look more like newborn giraffes—-long, clumsy and a bit slow. Not Amy. Her transition is quick, her arm swing is explosive, and she’s got a court vision allowing her to be productive hitting any angle. At current, she’s an M2 for the next level, but I wouldn’t be surprised that after training at PHP this season she becomes a more well-rounded middle, both on offense and defense.

In short, Huntington North is not exactly known for their volleyball success. Amy has single-handedly changed that, and for good reason. She’s an M2 with broad shoulders, a high-and-hard attack and solid defensive habits. I’d like to see more of her development as she gets older—-and on cue, she’s made a squad at PHP, adding to her meteoric rise she created this past fall. Size is something we don’t have much of in Indiana, let alone in the middle position, so it’s nice to see Amy own it and carry the flag for big and strong middles here in the Hoosier State.
