Hasner reached 1,000 career digs during Fellowship Christian’s postseason run and was later named Area Defensive Player of the Year. Her coach has credited her consistency, leadership and foundational role in the team’s success. That’s a recruitment profile I like because the production and intangible evaluation point in the same direction.

The job of an elite back-row player isn’t simply keeping the ball from touching the floor. It’s delivering enough controlled contacts that the setter can still run offense. Hasner’s leadership piece is equally important. Liberos see almost the entire court. They should be communicating seams, hitter tendencies, tips and adjustments before the rally forces someone else to recognize them. A defender who can combine reliable first contact with that level of organizational responsibility brings value on nearly every point. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Senior Ella Hasner Ella Hasner 5'4" | DS GA reached 1,000 career digs at Fellowship Christian on Oct. 6, accomplishing the mark in just two seasons with the program. Her coach also described Ella as the foundation of the team’s success because of her defensive consistency and leadership, while Fellowship has won 10 of its last 11 entering the next stage of postseason play. That’s the part of Ella’s season I find more interesting than the milestone itself. A libero doesn’t accumulate that kind of defensive responsibility without teams knowing exactly where she is. She’s being asked to handle first contact repeatedly and still provide a stable platform once opponents begin actively trying to move her around.

There’s also something to be said for making defense look routine. Great back-row play isn’t supposed to look frantic every rally. Reading early, being stopped before contact and giving the setter a controlled ball removes chaos from everyone else’s job. The numbers are big, but the steadiness behind them is what really makes Ella’s season stand out. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Ella brings strong composure and does a good job maintaining a steady platform. She tracks the ball well and contributes consistently in serve receive. Her control helps stabilize the backcourt. Ella supports overall team rhythm. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Ella is a communication anchor. She keeps the backcourt connected with constant, clear direction and takes ownership of the first touch in crucial moments. Her footwork is balanced, allowing her to stay controlled through contact. She brings leadership without needing to be loud — just steady, committed, and trusted. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast

Ella showed off her versatility by contributing to both defense and offense in a hybrid role. Her serve-receive work was crisp, and she brought her quick reaction time to setting as well—firing off back sets and quick balls with ease. She’s the kind of athlete who fills in gaps and steps up wherever she’s needed. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast
