Austin Kingsley | Prep Dig Scout
We’re wrapping up with perhaps the tournament’s most dominant middle blocker, especially in Saturday’s championship matches. Gegg scored at will during Shelton’s historic triumph over Leyton to secure the school’s first-ever title. Her position in Shelton’s starting rotation technically slots her as an outside hitter, but Gegg gets plenty of reps in the middle, too. She hammered down 24 kills in just three sets to punctuate Shelton’s best-ever stay in Lincoln.

Gegg’s infinite attack patterns make Shelton a difficult team to stop. She can hammer away on the standard middle quick in front of the setter, but Gegg does so much more than that for the Bulldogs. This savvy junior also takes a ton of first-ball volume on the left side and has expanded her repertoire on the slide. This wide array of routes helped Shelton clinch an emphatic 2-0 win against Overton.

We could have chosen several different players on the Shelton roster. We’re rolling with Gegg, the multi-talented junior attacker who has racked up 5.5 kills per set for the Bulldogs. Her native position is at middle blocker, but Gegg can take any swing necessary to earn a crucial side out. Shelton was our preseason Class D2 favorite this year, even after the Bulldogs clawed to the No. 8 seed in last year’s postseason. This small-town powerhouse is third in the D2 hierarchy and could improve on 2023’s tournament output.

Gegg’s terminal arm was a big reason we picked Shelton as the Class D2 preseason favorite. She is backing up her impressive 2023 season with a colossal uptick in production as a junior. Gegg is putting down over six kills per set on an equally astonishing 0.396 hitting percentage. This is the kind of middle blocker who can take sideout swings on the left side to get Shelton out of tough situations. That accounts for Gegg’s exceptional scoring volume, which will likely soar past her 300-kill mark from last year. The Bulldogs are building something special in the frontcourt.

Bring us more serving middles! Gegg has drawn a lot of attention for her physical play along the net, but that’s not the only thing she brings to the Shelton lineup. She also greatly exceeded half an ace per set and was not afraid to dig some balls along the end line, either. Middles who embrace strong serving are always worthy of praise.

Gegg has been somewhat of an unsung hero during Shelton’s rise to postseason contention. Her attacking volume is taking off in 2023 with over three kills per set on a 0.246 efficiency. The Bulldogs now have multiple attackers who can take over matches, and they still have a lot of time left with the program, too. This bodes well for Gegg and her Shelton teammates.
