I was able to watch Michio 16 Blue Smoke at the Windy City Qualifier and was impressed with the play of Josie Balkema. She is a six rotation outside hitter who can serve receive, pass, and score points. There is a spark and bounce to her game. She moves well on the court and definitely has a presence where they can look to her in and out of system.

To set in the back row and attack from the front row, you have to do well in both. In Josie’s case, she’s THAT much more marketable for a school looking for that hybrid athlete that shouldn’t be removed from the floor because of that well-rounded skill set. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was an accomplished beach attacker, as her controlled attacking style minimizes errors and finds holes and gaps in the defense. This is an article about attackers, but her setting is above average for her hybrid nature.
