Guilherme Torres | Prep Dig Scout
One of the top setters in the country, O’Brien guided Cinco Ranch to a sweep in their most challenging match in district play so far with another excellent performance. The senior’s playmaker’s ability to make the players around her better will be an even bigger asset to the Cougars this season, after they graduated several starters, and that showed against Tompkins. O’Brien pushed the right buttons from start to finish, running an effective offense against taller opponents and keeping all her hitters involved. The setter also made big plays on defense, come up with aces in key moments and had a solid presence at the net.

Cinco Ranch’s floor general seems ready to guide her team to another deep run in the playoffs this season. One of the most talented setters in the country in her age group, O’Brien continues to make her teammates better and was excellent at connecting with her new group of hitters and getting the best out of them with her intelligent distribution and impressive precision. A tall and athletic setter, she also contributes with her blocking and is a tremendous asset on the backcourt with her ability to serve and play defense at a very high level. The centerpiece in Cinco Ranch’s playing system, O’Brien looked more aggressive with her setter dumps and could make more of an impact in the team’s scoring efforts this system.

O’Brien has been huge for Cinco Ranch throughout her high school career and was one of the main reasons why the team made it to the State Championship match last year. A technical and creative setter, she runs the team’s offense flawlessly and is among the best in the country in the position. O’Brien has done an excellent job of adapting and making the most of the group of hitters she got to work with every year and she’ll need to do it again this season and several of Cinco Ranch’s last year’s starters graduated. She’s a complete player, who also blocks at a high level, can score off of setter dumps and is an outstanding defender.

One of the top setters in the state, O’Brien played like that against Cypress Ranch, leading Cinco to an emphatic victory against a team that’s considered one of the best in the region. Her accuracy was on point, as usual, and her ball distribution was impeccable, keeping all hitters involved and making combination plays when in system, but keeping things simple and going with the team’s main scorers in key moments. O’Brien also helped with her defense and got a big block early on. She had a great serving run at the start of the third set that put Cinco in a very comfortable position to win in three.
