Austin Kingsley | Prep Dig Scout
Gaughen commanded the Westside offense last weekend and always seemed to locate the hot hitter. Westside has plenty of attackers who can take over a match, but Gaughen’s impact as a steady setter cannot be overlooked. She competed well in a 5-1 system while blocking against some of Class A’s best left-side attackers. Saturday’s championship effort was proof that Westside can keep winning with multiple setters–a true sign of adaptability and resilience.

Gaughen has represented a few different Premier Nebraska squads throughout her club career. She meshed well with this year’s Premier 17 Red group and brought a lot more than just quality second contacts. The Omaha Westside setter also offered defensive grit at GJNC and filled seams well from the right-back area. Gaughen earned valuable postseason playing time last fall and will aim for more reps in her senior season.

Gaughen was thrust into the spotlight with Omaha Westside last fall and made the most of this high-profile opportunity. She’s now thriving on the club side as one of the dynamic setters in the Premier 17 Red lineup. Having Gaughen in the backcourt gives 17 Red a ball control boost in a variety of ways. If the team is in system, Gaughen is sure to deliver perfect location while spreading the ball around from pin to pin. Gaughen can also dig some heat in the right-back area and sees the floor like a libero. This is a multi-talented asset who has developed a ton in the last several months.

Kathryn impressed me with how well she spread the offense. She kept every hitter involved, and you never knew who she was going to set next. She hid her choices very well and would hold blockers consistently. She has a soft touch on the ball and has clean pushes from pin to pin.

Gaughen helps round out the strong contingent of 2025s who are playing up a year with Premier 17 Silver. During the team’s runner-up effort at Show Me, Gaughen was an indispensable leader as a backcourt setter. But, of course, this was just a continuation of Gaughen’s fall campaign with North Bend Central, a team that was almost unstoppable throughout most of 2022.

We’re wrapping up with a player that knows how to excel on the championship stage. Gaughen has been around for North Bend Central’s incredible run of athletic success, both in volleyball and hoops. Her forays with Premier Nebraska have been equally successful.
