About Layla

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I'm a consistent six-rotation OH,who plays with a lot of intensity and focus. I use my explosiveness, athleticism and my high flying abilities to dominate and stay aggressive on the attack. I love making great passes. I'm locked in on defense, taking pride in blocks, digs and hustle plays, while staying ready to grind out every point. I stay hungry for the ball and ready to thrive under pressure.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

My mentality is I don't have to be the captain to set the tone, I lead by example. To me every rep and touch matters. I show up ready to grind, no matter the score or moment. I aim to be the most reliable player on the court. I'm mentally in the game every single point. I consider myself as a "go getter" that is coachable and self-driven. I love to be challenged and I'm very competitive.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

A club I'm involved in is the Helping Hands Program at my school. In Helping Hands we focus on ways we can help our community and those around us. Whether that's donating toys, clothes/ shoes or helping with a food drive. We are always making sure that our community is supported, seen and or heard. We recently made teddy bears for the kid staying at the JW House that are currently in treatment.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

When it comes to leadership and teamwork, I've learned to lead by example. Whether it's taking warmups seriously, stepping up in big moments of the game, communicating on the court, pouring energy and belief into my teammates or celebrating their points like they were mine. I make sure that everything I do, I put my heart into it. I'm all about the team first and winning over everything else.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

A significant challenge I have faced in the past, has been not getting in my head after making mistakes. Whether that's for defense, hitting, or serve receive. In a difficult tournaments, I remind myself that even if I make a mistake, it doesn't define me as a player, even while preforming under pressure. I adjust my game, make smart plays to support my team, and focus on the next play.

What type of college are you looking for?

My goal is to play at the D1 level. I'm looking for a school that cherishes both academic and athletic success. A program that has a winning culture, has great coaching and the environment along with the resources needed to allow me to grow, develop and strive as a student athlete. A program that actually needs and values me, not only as a player but a key member in their student body/community.
