Austin Kingsley | Prep Dig Scout
She’s not done yet. Wood walked off of the prep stage last fall with a Class D2 state title at Overton. Her slide attacks and competitive spirit were legendary on Nebraska’s small-town scene. Wood now brings those valuable traits to South Central NE 18 Black, and it’s already paying dividends in 2024.

This is another instance where the inclusion of both middle blockers on a single team is absolutely mandatory. Class D2 has not seen this kind of 1-2 punch at this position in quite a while. Wood brought her own dominant traits to the Overton frontcourt, including a wicked attack behind the setter in two-hitter rotations. Opposing teams never got a break from Overton’s middle blocker onslaught, which is a big reason why the Eagles conquered Class D2 in 2023.

Middles galore!
There are not many middle blocker tandems like Ryan and Wood, and it’s no wonder why Overton is leading the charge in Class D2. Ryan has been almost unstoppable throughout her career, making a 0.400 hitting clip look like an ordinary feat. But Wood has carved her own path into the spotlight and is every bit as terminal in the frontcourt. This means that Overton’s opponents never get a “break” in any rotation—a truly dynamic duo.

The 1-2 punch is back. Even while Ryan has been putting up massive numbers for Overton, Wood has kept pace with her fellow senior and is carving a superstar path of her own. She greatly exceeded four kills per set and hit over 0.350 in her junior year, giving the Eagles a potential title-winning combo in 2023.

Wood’s postseason dominance made her a mandatory addition to this feature. She has rocketed up the 2024 rankings with her incredible all-around displays for Overton, which finished runner-up in Class D2 this year. Six-rotation middle blockers are a rare sight, but Wood’s versatility makes her all-around presence a necessity for the Eagles.

Overton is making a habit of producing some stat stuffers, and that bodes well for the Eagles in 2022. Like most of the players on this feature, Wood’s production comes in a variety of categories. She is putting down balls at an incredible rate and is also adding a good batch of digs and blocks to her credit. Overton’s outside hitter spot is loaded enough to make yet another push to Lincoln for postseason play.
