Middles are built to control tempo, and Payton did exactly that. She sealed the line with disciplined hands, pressed over the tape with authority, and erased high-contact swings from opposing pins. Her block timing on final day was elite — reading the setter’s release, closing quickly, and taking away space before hitters could tool the seam. A sequence of back-to-back shutdowns from first Payton completely flipped the energy in the gym.
