Coming in as number nine on our class of 2018 ranks is rising senior, Ellie Koontz. Preparing for her final season at the Academy of Holy Angels, Koontz says she’s excited to soon begin her collegiate career with Marquette University.
“I am excited to face Creighton because I know they are always good competition,” Koontz admitted. “I am also excited to travel out to all the schools out east and see those cool states.”
Koontz didn’t begin thinking about playing at the collegiate level until her freshman year of high school; even then, she wasn’t 100% sure it was what she wanted to do. It didn’t take long for that realization to soon kick in during her sophomore year, where she officially began her recruitment process – one she describes as “exciting, scary, and stressful.”
“It was hard only being a sophomore and not having a clue where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life,” Koontz explained.
However, her decision-making process proved not to be as difficult after she was drawn to the Big East school’s balance between academics and athletics.
“When I first toured Marquette, I loved the campus and the lifestyle of the city,” Koontz said. “I loved the coaches and the team too.”
With a year left until her college days begin, Koontz is resting her shoulder for her upcoming season with Holy Angels in August.
“We lost a lot of seniors last year, so I am excited to see how we can fill those spots in,” Koontz said. “We have another good shot this year, so I’m excited!”
From falling in love with the game in her fourth grade gym class, to playing for one of the Big East’s top programs, Koontz has come quite a long way.
