This is the first article in the series The Volleyball Interview, highlighting influential high school Nebraska volleyball players of all ages and levels to get to know them on and off the court on a deeper level.
Melanie Brecka is a senior at Lincoln Southeast High School. With 84 kills and a .438 hitting percentage this season, there is a reason she is ranked 9th in the Prep Dig Nebraska class of 2018 rankings. Here is my interview with Brecka:
What do you see your greatest strength to be on the court?
“My greatest strength on the court is probably my hitting.”
What do you see your greatest weakness to be on the court?
“My greatest weakness is definitely my passing but my passing isn’t terrible!”
What makes you excited about this season?
“I’m excited about this season because it’s my senior year and I get to spend it playing with my three best friends and we’ve been playing together for seven years.”
What is your favorite thing about playing volleyball?
“My favorite thing about playing volleyball is getting a kill or a block and hearing our student section go crazy and just getting super excited about it!”
Do you have any pre-game rituals?
“At Southeast we always go into the locker room, hook up a phone to a speaker, and just get pumped about the game.”
What do you never leave your school for an away match or tournament without?
“I never leave without my speaker and headphones because I can’t get ready for a game without my music!”
What is your favorite moment in your high school volleyball career?
“My favorite moment in my high school career would be beating Southwest in the district championship last year because we had lost to them the previous times we played them and it just felt amazing to beat them when it really counted!”
What do you want your college major to be?
“I am really interested in studying cyber security so I would major in computer science and minor in law.”
What is your favorite off the court activity and why?
“My favorite off the court activity is hanging out with my friends and just talking about anything and everything because we know each other so well and we have so much in common that we can literally talk for hours and never run out of things to talk about!”
