Continue ReadingGrand Island Central Catholic sophomore setter Katie Maser is a pretty quiet and almost bashful, but there is one thing she has never been shy about – her desire to be a Creighton Bluejay.
That became reality last week when Maser accepted a opportunity to be a preferred walk-on for the Bluejays.
Maser, 5’9, helped lead Grand Island Central Catholic to the Class C-1 state finals with more than 1,000 assists for the Crusaders while averaging 11.2 assists per set. For her career already, Maser has 1,889 assists and averages 10.8 per set. She plays her club volleyball for Nebraska Juniors.
“Even if I wasn’t playing volleyball, Creighton would be one of my top schools to go to,” Maser, who plans to study in the areas of pediatrics and physical therapy, said. “So, it’s just really great to be able to play volleyball as well. I’ve always dreamed of going there.”
So far, Maser is the Bluejays’ only setter in the class of 2020. However, Creighton has a commitment from 2018 setter Allison Van Eekeren of the Chicago area and a commitment from 2021 setter Kendra Wait from the Kansas City area.
“Even if I didn’t get to set, there’s a chance that I can be a DS,” Maser said. “There’s, like, three of us coming in, so I’m going to have to work hard. We just all have to work really hard.”
Recruiting really picked up for Maser earlier this year during the club season and her hands and ball placement drew the attention of college coaches from all levels. But, Maser said, once she made a trip to the Creighton campus it was an easy decision to make.
“I feel like it’s a really big family and they all care about each other,” Maser said. “Everybody wants you to do your best. They brought me in and made me feel like part of the team.”
Maser also humbly added that she knows her success is a product of being surrounded by a large number of people who have helped get her to this point.
“I want to thank everyone that has helped me. All my teammates, my coaches and my family,” she said. “Without them I wouldn’t be where I am now without their support.”
