Millard South, which won the 2017 title, was able to navigate through the A/B/C1 with the least amount of damage again this year, going 13-5 to capture the 2018 championship.
Millard South’s depth seemed to be the difference for the Patriots as they are able to keep six really good players on the court at all times and don’t rely on any one player to carry the load offensively. The Patriots will be an interesting team to keep an eye on this fall because they figure to only get better. Freshman setter Makayla Fleming improves with every match and 6-foot freshman middle Laci Abendroth had some nice moments.
You hate to say the St. Paul is a surprise team, because really they never should be. The Wildcats are always a well-coached, competitive group of kids, but I have to say that it did surprise me just how well they played today in finishing second with a 12-6 mark. St. Paul split with Millard South, Lincoln Lutheran and Norris biut swept Hastings and Bishop Neumann. With Hayley Fox, Brooke Poppert, Josie Jakubowski and Paige Lukasiewicz, et al, St. Paul will be one of the top teams in C-1.
