Continue ReadingThis week our setter spotlight is on the talented, senior Jordyn Maas. This spunky setter has been an important part of the Minnesota North club and her high school team, Duluth Denfeld, for many years. With the new trend of “tall setters”, Maas represents the traditional role of a setter at 5’4”. She makes up for lack of height with strength, speed and natural athleticism. Her ability to chase down balls mixed with her soft hands help her teammates stand out from the rest. She makes her hitters look great with her precision and hustle. Also, Maas works harder than most setters on defense. Having spent some time playing as a defensive specialist over the years, she reads hitters well and plays defense before breaking to the net.
Jordyn has the quality that all setters need but only some have: leadership. Now a senior, she will have the biggest role on her team, but she has been an important part of Denfeld volleyball for a long time having made JV in 8th grade. Even a stranger can notice the positive relationships she has with her teammates. She spreads the ball evenly between hitters while picking apart the opponent’s defense.
Jordyn had this to say about her role, “I really fell in love with volleyball in 8th grade when I became a setter. Becoming the setter brought out the natural leader in me and also helped me understand how the game works beyond just getting the ball to a hitter. Volleyball makes me want to be the best person I can be and strive for my hopes and dreams.”
It is easy to see, she’s a great person and leader on and off the court!
