Unless you are a coach or actively involved with a club program, you may not realize there are two governing groups in club volleyball: USAV and JVA. This season looks to bring about some changes for clubs in Minnesota. While most are still enjoying the high school season, those behind the scenes of some of the biggest clubs in the state are planning and prepping for the 2018-2019 club season and most of the chatter is about teams considering the switch from USAV to JVA. This article’s purpose is to inform so one can participate on this on-going debate.
USAV
-USAV was started in New York in 1928
–USVA events only allow teams who are registered with USVA to participate.
–“Stay-and-Play” aligns teams with certain hotels for events. Depending on your viewpoint, this can be convenient and a boost for economy, or it can seem demanding and over-priced.
-North Country Region (NCR) is affiliated USAV.
-USAV provides valuable training, for example: Impact Certifications and SafeSport training for coaches.
JVA
-Late in 2006, a group of clubs from across the country came together to form JVA after becoming disenchanted with different elements of USAV. (1)
-JVA allows both JVA and USAV registered teams to play in events.
-JVA supports and partners with AAU
-JVA doesn’t require certain hotels for teams.
-JVA membership has been growing and is anticipated to continue.
It’s important to keep having these conversations because all juniors deserve the best volleyball we can offer. So whether your club chooses USAV or JVA, you can be sure of one thing: lots of great volleyball.
