One of the night’s most significant results saw #6 seed Russell-Tyler-Ruthton defeat #3 seed Yellow Medicine East 3-1 Section 3A competition. YME was riding a 17-match win streak and featured some of the area’s most dominant hitters of the season. Playing on the road, the Knights (18-9) were able to come back from a first set loss to cruise to the victory with three straight set wins for a 19-25, 25-20, 25-10, 25-15 result. McKinely Schreurs (S | 2021) dished out 29 assists for the match, which involved great offensive production from both Madison Witte (MH | 2020) and Kaleigh Carr (OH | 2021). They advance to take on #4 ranked Wabasso in quarterfinal action on Tuesday. The Rabbits move forward after defeating Lakeview 3-1 in their first match of the postseason.
Also winning on the road was the #5 seed Canby over #4 seed MACCRAY. Set scores were 22-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-15. The Lancers improve to 17-11 on the season and will next face top-ranked Minneota on Tuesday. MACCRAY ends their season at 16-14 overall. Minneota easily swept their match over Central Minnesota Christian (25-7, 25-25, 25-6).
Section 5A saw some significant wins as well with Benson defeating Kerkhoven-Murdoch-Sunburg in one of the most competitive matches on the evening. The Braves, 8-14 overall, were facing an 0-2 deficit with all the momentum in favor of KMS (16-13). However, they were not to be denied as they stormed back to win the final three sets 25-23, 25-22, 16-14 and walk away with a spot in Tuesday’s quarterfinals where they will next face #3 seed Royalton. Claire Ricard (RS | 2020) and Mariah Ahrndt (S | 2020) led Benson in the winning effort. Ricard pounded 15 kills while Ahrndt had a solid overall evening with 18 digs, eight kills, and three aces. Another mild upset saw Braham take down PACT Charter School 3-1.
2A
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Section 8AA’s North #3 seed, came from behind to upset #2 Hawley 3-2 (23-25, 25-15, 18-25, 28-26, 15-10). They advance to take on Roseau on Tuesday, a team they recently lost to (0-2) a the Pumpkin Classic tournament. The Rebels have been led all season by Joeli Kelson (OH | 2019) and Peyton Wilson (MH | 2020) and are 14-17 overall.
3A
The 3A seeds have held true to form except for Section 6AAA , which saw the #6 (Robbinsdale-Armstrong) and #7 (Hopkins) seeds (highlighted Thursday) earn upsets to advance. Section 7AAA witnessed similar results as #6 seed Andover defeated #3 seed Anoka (26-24, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22) to end their season as #7 seed Princeton dropped #2 seed St. Francis by set scores of 25-23, 25-22, 25-21. Andover will host visiting Princeton on Tuesday with a section championship opportunity on the line. Top-seeded Forest Lake takes on #5 seed Grand Rapids on the other half of the bracket.
