1. As coaches are limited to specific windows of time that they can communicate with and evaluate prospects, knowing this will lessen the anxiety when anticipating communication with a specific school. Because you don’t hear from them may mean that the rules are prohibiting them from connecting with you.
2. As the NCAA is regulating recruiting more closely across many of its sponsored sports, it is important to stay aware of the rules so as to not find yourself in a situation where a violation may come back to haunt you or the program down the road. As violations may not impact you individually in the way of NCAA or institution sanctions, the program you join may be impacted with damaging outcomes that have potential to greatly impact the overall experience.
3. With the proposed rules that impact the timing of scholarship offers (to be later in the process in volleyball) will allow prospects to be more patient and thorough in their recruiting process without the pressures to have to commit before August just prior to their junior year beginning.
What some of the proposed rules indicate regarding sophomore and junior years are (primarily for Division I schools):
- Recruiting materials related to an institution’s athletics programs may not be shared with a prospect before June 15 at the conclusion of the prospect’s sophomore year of high school. Additionally, telephone calls from the coaching staff to prospects OR from the prospect directly to any member of the coaching staff are not allowed to occur before this same date.
- Off-campus recruiting contacts by a member of the coaching staff cannot occur before August 1st of the prospect’s junior year. This includes any recruiting communication during an institution’s camps. Further, paid recruiting visits to campus may not occur before this date as well.
