Over the three days of the Stars and Stripes Classic, only one team was able to take this team to three sets. Mizuno M1 16-3 fought hard but were not able to upset Kandi. The scores from the three sets were 25-19, 24-26, and 15-11. In the end a few more mistakes cost M1 the match.
The match that I saw was Monday around lunchtime against a strong Vital Volleyball 16-1 Gold. Vital Volleyball beat Kokoro 16-3 in a tight match 27-25 and 25-19. In the limited errors helped Vital Volleyball edge out Kokoro. But tough serving and hitting power gave Kandi the upperhand.
The championship match took place late Monday afternoon against Kokoro 16-2’s. During this match Kandi kept control from the start. Kokoro 16-2’s were a tough team but it appeared their fire was fading and they couldn’t get the momentum back on their side. This match sealed the perfect weekend for KEVC winning 25-16 and 25-15.
Carli Vargason was instrumental in the offense with her excellent serve receive passing form. They used their right side Sophie Kobienia to catch defenses on their heels. Setter, Chloe Lieser, made good choices and will be one to watch. The team’s libero Chloe Lieser continuously coming up with huge plays on defense and adding pressure with her strong serving. Mackenzie Knofcynski is a big middle who added strong blocks and excitement at the net. These are just a few of the players who really stood out in the match I saw but a team does not go undefeated over three days unless the whole team has depth and talent. Other standouts included:
Ashley Guse, Savanna Louwagie E, Madelyn Gregory, Larae Kram, Bailey Olson, Aleah Zieske and Chloe Lieser.
This is Kandi’s only 16 level team. They have had a lot of success all season long. Big wins include JVA Midwest Challenge Champs and AAU Grand Prix. I’m sure they could have done very well in a higher division and perhaps next time they will go into Open or Premier. They head to Orlando for AAU Nationals in a few short weeks and we can’t wait to see how they do there!
