Only a handful of high school players will ever reach the numeric milestone in their high school volleyball careers. Only a week into the season, these athletes are already making history.
It was only the second match for the Kenyon Wanamingo Knights when they faced off against long-time rival Waterville Elysian Morristown. KW barely edged out WEM in this four-set thriller. After losing the first set 21-25, Kenyon came back with the next three sets: 28-26, 25-19, and 25-19. Leading the way for the visiting team was senior, Madi Luebke. Not only did her team come out on top but she earned her 1,000 career set assist. The 26 assists she earned were enough to boost her past the milestone. She also added 15 digs. This 5’9”, three-sport athlete has claimed her spot among the states’ elite setters. Also, she is not the nay setter for her team. Fellow senior, Riley Dummer tallied 25 assists. Look for Luebke to add another couple hundred assist before the season is over as KW has high hopes for the state tournament; and with these two setters helping their team win games with 50+ kills they who’ll be hard to beat.
Next up, a junior from Hayfield High school, fighting to put her team in contention with some of top teams in southern Minnesota. Cela Carney played her heart out in a hard-fought loss to Lewiston Altura. Her team didn’t get the win, but it was enough to put this libero over the 1,000 dig mark. The young Hayfield team will look to Carney for leadership as they try to make it past the 1A West championship; with defense like this, there always is hope!
Congrats to both players, teams, families and coaches on this incredible accomplishment.
