Teams: Ironwood, L’Anse, West Iron County, Hancock, Iron Mountain, Calumet
Prediction: The Copper Kings of Calumet not only have a great mascot, but they are a solid volleyball team as well. I like them to advance to the regionals.
District 66 at Ishpeming Westwood
Teams: Ishpeming Westwood, Gwinn, Norway, Bark River-Harris, Negaunee, Manistique, Ishpeming
Prediction: The Emeralds of Manistique should be the crown jewel in this crowded district.
District 67 at Johannesburg-Lewiston
Teams: Charlevoix, Rogers City, Johannesburg-Lewiston, Harbor Springs, Indian Lakes, East Jordan
Prediction: Rogers City won this competitive district a year ago and I like the Hurons to find a way to repeat this week.
District 68 at Maple City Glen Lake
Teams: Glen Lake, Traverse City St. Francis, Suttons Bay, Grand Traverse Academy, Mancelona, Elk Rapids
Prediction: Traverse City St. Francis made a run to Battle Creek in 2018. A lot of contributing pieces remain for the Gladiators and their experience from a year ago should pay off this week.
District 69 at McBain
Teams: McBain, Lake City, Evart, LeRoy Pine River, Manton
Prediction: The McBain Ramblers will have to pick up three wins on their home floor to win the district, but I think they have the talent to get it done.
District 70 at Carson City-Crystal
Teams: Carson City-Crystal, St. Louis, Beal City, Ithaca, Montabella, Hemlock
Prediction: This field features some teams that know what playing in Battle Creek is all about. Beal City is a team that could return to Kellogg Arena this season.
District 71 at Farwell
Teams: Sanford Meridian, Farwell, Beaverton, Harrison, Pinconning
Prediction: It’s an all-Jack Pine Conference district, so it’s only right that the conference champ would emerge the winner. Beaverton is my pick.
District 72 at Alcona
Teams: Roscommon, Alcona, Whittemore-Prescott, Oscoda, Houghton Lake
Prediction: Houghton Lake won an exciting district tournament last year, besting Roscommon in five sets. These two could meet in the semifinal, but I like the Bobcats to win it again.
District 73 at Hart
Teams: Hesperia, Hart, Holton, Shelby, Mason County Central
Prediction: Hesperia looks like the top team in this field. The Panthers haven’t dropped many matches and the ones they have, many have been against bigger programs or top-10 teams.
District 74 at Muskegon Western Michigan Christian
Teams: Western Michigan Christian, Saugatuck, North Muskegon, Holland Black River, Fennville
Prediction: Western Michigan Christian is the team to beat in a district it gets to host. North Muskegon could provide a roadblock in the final, but the Warriors should prevail.
District 75 at Grandville Calvin Christian
Teams: NorthPointe Christian, Covenant Christian, Wyoming Potter’s House, Calvin Christian, Pewamo-Westphalia, Saranac
Prediction: There should be a lot of exciting action in this district. Four of the six teams are HM or higher in our D3 rankings. Pewamo-Westphalia is a school that knows how to win in any sport, volleyball included. Go with the Pirates.
District 76 at Morley Stanwood
Teams: Morley Stanwood, Lakeview, Kent City, Ravenna, White Cloud
Prediction: Morley Stanwood has been able to hold its own with some of the best in Division 3. The Mohawks look to be built for a postseason run, which starts with a district title.
District 77 at Watervliet
Teams: Bangor, Watervliet, Hartford, Bloomingdale, Gobles
Prediction: This district is pretty much going on a hunch. It seems as if any team could emerge, but I will pick Bangor to be the winner.
District 78 at Lawton
Teams: Lawton, Marcellus, Bridgman, Decatur, Niles Brandywine, Cassopolis
Prediction: Both Bridgman and Brandywine are top-20 programs in our D3 rankings and could meet up in this district final. The Bees have been able to get the best of that matchup.
District 79 at Centreville
Teams: Constantine, Centreville, Bronson, White Pigeon, Union City
Prediction: Bronson has been the standard in Division 3/Class C for years, but the Vikings face a real threat in the district host, Centreville. The Bulldogs own a win over Bronson earlier in the year and having a potential final on their own floor gives them the edge.
District 80 at Kalamazoo Christian
Teams: Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep, Galesburg-Augusta, Schoolcraft, Delton Kellogg, Kalamazoo Christian, Maple Valley
Prediction: Third-ranked Kalamazoo Christian is a great team that gets to host a district. Problem is, Schoolcraft is one of the best teams in the state regardless of division.
District 81 at Hudson
Teams: Jonesville, Quincy, Reading, Addison, Hudson
Prediction: The host Hudson Tigers look to have things shaping up for them to win the title this week. Hudson has been able to test itself against some of Division 3’s best this year and will be ready for what the district brings.
District 82 at Concord
Teams: Springport, Homer, Hanover-Horton, Jackson Lumen Christi, Concord
Prediction: Hanover-Horton has had some highs and lows this year, but the Comets can be a regional championship contender when they are at their best.
District 83 at Vandercook Lake
Teams: Napoleon, Grass Lake, Michigan Center, East Jackson, Jackson Prep, Vandercook Lake
Prediction: Vandercook Lake has been testing itself all season with a competitive schedule. The Jayhawks now get to host a district. I smell a championship coming.
District 84 at Dansville
Teams: Bath, Leslie, Laingsburg, Stockbridge, Potterville, Dansville
Prediction: This will be a wide-open district with a lot of familiar opponents. My gut says go with Bath, who was able to grab some nice wins in the CMAC this season.
District 85 at Adrian Madison
Teams: Sand Creek, Adrian Madison, Manchester, Clinton, Morenci
Prediction: I see a Manchester vs. Adrian Madison district final. Manchester won the meeting early in the season, but the home-court-advantage should push the Trojans to the district championship.
District 86 at Petersburg Summerfield
Teams: Erie Mason, Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, Petersburg Summerfield, Blissfield, Ottawa Lake Whiteford
Prediction: Blissfield is a good team and could win a district title elsewhere, but SMCC could be your state champion this year. The Kestrels have it all and should power past this field.
District 87 at Whitmore Lake
Teams: Whitmore Lake, Canton Prep, Charyl Stockwell Academy, Ypsilanti Arbor Prep, Ann Arbor Greenhills
Prediction: Charyl Stockwell Academy has the look of a championship contender in Division 3 this year. They have been one of our top-ranked teams for most of the year and should be the team to beat in this draw.
District 88 at Allen Park Cabrini
Teams: Cabrini, Riverview Gabriel Richard, Dearborn Heights Star International, Taylor Prep, Ecorse
Prediction: Riverview Gabriel Richard and Cabrini meet in the district opener and I like the winner to run the table. Richard won the previous meeting and I will pick them to do it again.
District 89 at Detroit Edison
Teams: Detroit Edison, Hope of Detroit Academy, Dearborn Advanced Tech Academy, Detroit Cristo Rey
Prediction: It’s a small field at Edison this week and I like Dearborn Advanced Tech Academy the beat out the other three contenders to claim a district crown.
District 90 at Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett
Teams: Madison Heights Madison, Detroit Community, Detroit Central, Detroit Jalen Rose, Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett
Prediction: Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett has the home court this week and it should propel them to the district championship.
District 91 at Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart
Teams: Royal Oak Shrine, Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest, Warren Michigan Collegiate, Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart, Madison Heights Bishop Foley
Prediction: This is a nice collection of competitive teams with a few district winners from 2018. Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest and Shrine meet in the opener. The winner is my pick and I feel the Crusaders are a little more battle-tested.
District 92 at Capac
Teams: Clintondale, Capac, New Haven, Kimball Landmark Academy, Mount Clemens, Memphis
Prediction: There is a potential for a lot of teams to come away with this district, but my pick is New Haven. The Rockets were in the thick of a conference championship race this year and that should help in the close sets.
District 93 at Vassar
Teams: Marlette, Millington, Vassar, Brown City, Otisville LakeVille Memorial, Sandusky
Prediction: Millington was able to win a district championship last year and I like the way things shape up for them in this field.
District 94 at Byron
Teams: Byron, Flint Beecher, Burton Atherton, Burton Bendle, Burton Bentley
Prediction: I expect the semifinal between Burton Bendle and Burton Atherton to determine the winner. They each have a win over the other, but a coin flip told me to go with Bendle.
District 95 at Reese
Teams: New Lothrop, Reese, St. Charles, Montrose, Valley Lutheran
Prediction: Valley Lutheran has had a great year out of the TVC West and I expect that strong play to continue this week against a competitive field.
District 96 at Bad Axe
Teams: Harbor Beach, Unionville-Sebewaing, Bad Axe, Cass City, Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Laker
Prediction: This is a strong district in the thumb area with a lot of potential winners. USA and Harbor Beach meet in the opener and will determine the eventual winner, in my opinion. USA got the win recently and has last year’s run to Battle Creek to rely on.
