Continue ReadingIt isn’t an easy job, that of the assistant coach, but these seven make it feel that way. Their job description is lengthy, but they find a way to balance the crazy schedule, roster changes and so much more. Here is a quick look at some of the state’s best assistant coaches:
Alanna Hunter, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa – 5A She brings energy, youth and experience to their program. As a science teacher, she demonstrates her passion for athletics and academics. They had a great season and she was part of the success leading to the state tournament.
Jami Carr, Kittson County Central – 8A Jami is very busy in the fall, but manages her duties well: coaching volleyball, starting the new school year as a K-12 principal, and as the Athletic Director. She impresses us with her continued passion for volleyball and her students.
Jamie Winchell, Cannon Falls – 1AA Her maiden name Jamie Quam, is one that is known well to those in the Cannon Falls and Kenyon Wanamingo area. The Quam family boasts a lot of great athletes over the years from her father, Danny Quam, and relatives Mara Quam. Her daughter Jaci Winchell is was the setter for the Bombers and reached her 1,000 career. Jamie uses all of her family history and knowledge to help establish the Cannon Falls team.
Char Kuyava, Proctor – 7AA This program has really taken off. The varsity ended the regular season 21-2 in the Lake Superior Conference. They have a very young varsity which then can be hard to make a strong JV team with those who are left. Kuyava has been an instrumental part of the program’s growth.
Rita Girgen, Tartan – 4AAA Working alongside head coach, Alyssa Engel, the two have laid a strong foundation for what they want the volleyball program to become. This includes academic guidelines, travel policies and so much more.
Michael Becker, Benilde-St. Margaret’s – 6AAA Becker is very involved at BSM, as a teacher and track coach. He also brings his experience from coaching at Kokoro club since 2014.
Nate Eckman, Brainerd – 8AAA Not only is he one team’s best players father, but he also is an experienced volleyball player having played AVP Beach Volleyball.
