Continue ReadingThe biggest storm this year is anticipated to hit this Friday into the weekend, we just hope teams planned ahead and arrive before it so they can play in the Frostbite Volleyball Festival held in Rochester. Despite the snow and frigid temperatures, these athletes are going to be eager to get on the court.
This age group can not be overlooked, because anything is possible: a top seeded team can get beat by the last ranked team in pool play, there are sure to be several ties before heading into tournament play, and mistakes are crucial and inevitable. It’s exciting as the momentum constantly changes and coaches work to help these athletes improve with each point. Here are the match-ups we can’t wait to see:
Pool B: Crossfire 16 Black vs Stewie 16 Blue
This is sure to be a strong match-up. Stewie is known for their strong defense, great setters, and deep bench. If this roster looks anything like their junior varsity line-up, teams be warned! Likewise, this Crossfire team is seeded 1st in their pool. They are the club’s second 16’s team but they still bring a a tall front row, with two setters who are close to six foot tall: Bella Bresnahan (5’11”) and Anna Busch (5’10.)
Pool C: Dbq Elite 161 National (IA) vs Iowa Heart 16U Black (IA)
These out of state teams will travel north, despite the cold to challenge the Minnesota teams. Both of these teams present a high caliber of talent. Look for one of them to be playing for gold on Sunday.
Anticipated match-ups: Teams will need to do well in their pool to have a chance at advancing to the championships. These are the match-ups we’d love to see.
Vital Volleyball 16-2 Royal vs SMV 15-1
Both teams are tough servers with a few big hitters and a well-rounded defense. This could be an early match in tournament play that eliminates one of the top teams but the losing team will do well in consolation bracket. Vital Volleyball faces off against the older, tougher SMV 16-1 in pool play and a second match-up with SMV is likely!
Shakopee 16-1 vs Eau Claire Air 15 Blue
Which is better: offense or defense? Shakopee will bring the fast offense but Eau Claire’s defensive skills are known to be strong. With it being so early in the season, we can’t comfortably make predictions, but we know if they face off it will be a fun one to watch.
Good luck to all the young players.
