Put on by Mizuno Northern Lights Volleyball, M1 Volleyball, and MN Select Volleyball, it has become one of the best in the state drawing teams from all over. Despite being the first weekend and following a long holiday, a few teams came out strong and set the stage for a promising season. Undefeated teams included:
Vital Volleyball 17 Gold – They showed their dominance against Northern Heat 16-2 and two fellow Vital Volleyball teams; including a close victory over the Vital Volleyball 18-2’s. This team is rather small compared to others in the 17’s and 18’s. Their strengths were their passing and defense. Head coach Emily Foster, also the head coach at the St. Olaf College, looks to have already established a fast offense started by near perfect passing and led by setters Cleo Haase (soph. @ Academy Of Holy Angels) and Shannon Murray (jr. @ Burnsville.)
Eden Prairie 17 Black – This team showed up ready to highlight their skills. They easily won their first two matches and ended up edging out a tough MN Select 15-2’s team. EP narrowly won the third set 15-13 making a less mistakes and bringing lots of energy to the final match of the day. The team has a great deal of young talent, most are sophomores who played on junior varsity this past season. A few also dressed for varsity: Piper Lange (5’11”setter), Paige O’Connell (5’10” right side), Katelyn Jensen (5’5” defensive specialist) and Anika Lange (5’9” middle.)
Northern Lights 16 Red – The highlight of their weekend came when they defeated their fellow club members NL 16 Black. It was a close match with scores 17-25, 25-20 and 19-17. And even though that last set could have gone either way, it was a huge victory for the Red squad who is considered to be “lower” team of the two. They showed they had just as much talent and even more determination. Of course we are sure to see these two face off again in the future, until then, the Red team will proudly hold bragging rights.
MN Select 16-2 – A solid start for the 16-2’s included beating a tough KEVC 15-1 and NL 17-R. This team consists of some of the top sophomores from Wayzata High School: Emily Soderlund, Kathryn Riviere, Melanie Goldstein and Molly Soderlund. Look for them to be a top finisher in 16’s events and tough contender in 17’s too.
Other teams that were perfect for the opening weekend include:
- Mizuno M1 15 White, 16 Blue, 17-1, 18-1
- MN Select 15-1, 15-3, 15-White, 16-2, 16-Black, 18-1
- Northern Lights 15-2, 16- Red, 17-1
- SAJO 15-1
- SWC 14-1
- Vital Volleyball 15-3 White, 17-1 Gold
