Continue ReadingNearly two years ago, the well-established volleyball program, Wabasha-Kellog, was turned upside down when the town’s beloved coach passed away. Tara Biever, was an outstanding coach, mother, and hero to those she knew.
Biever grew up and was a graduate from WK schools. She stayed close to home and returned with an Education degree and eagerness to coach. In 2007, she was named as the varsity coach; however, prior to that, she was an assistant for many seasons. The time spent building up the athletes skills started to show with winning records. Biever had a natural ability to bring out the best in her athletes and push them beyond their potential while instilling a love for the sport.
The best example of the type of athlete she helped create is her own daughter Kalyn Biever. Together they were unstoppable. In 2010 the mother-daughter pair led WK to a state A championship. Then in 2011, they lost in the section championship. Kalyn was a product of her mother’s teaching, she holds the school’s setting assist record, was a three-time first team All-State recipient, All-conference four years, and 2011 Winona Daily News Player of the year. She went on to play at Winona State University, while her mom continued on coaching.
Neither could have been prepared for the battle Tara would face after being diagnosed with cancer. But if anyone had the drive and determination to fight, it was these two competitive ladies. Tara coached longer than most anticipated demonstrating her love and passion for her program and players. Tragically, she passed in October of 2017, and in the midst of mourning, Kalyn stepped up to help manage her mom’s coaching responsibilities.
Tara’s impact on the lives of WK families, athletes and competitors lives on through the reputation Wabasha Kellog Volleyball and through her daughter, Kalyn, who now coaches 7th grade athlete in St. Charles. Tara Biever created pride, success and a legacy for so many athletes in south-east Minnesota and her legacy will not be forgotten.
