The 2020 season of the Class 2A in Washington state should have top-level competition from start to finish and these five teams might be one step ahead of the other as they have some of the best setters in the division.
Noelani Souza – Senior – Washington
An All-State first-team selection in 2019, when Washington finished third at the State Championship, Noelani Souza makes great use of the perks of playing for her grandfather, Patriots’ head coach Paul Souza. The 5’3” setter has a rare combination of craftiness and consistency, having registered 291 assists in only 40 sets (7.3), but also finding ways to score despite of her limited size. Last season, she added 72 points for the Patriots between kills (35), aces (35) and blocks (2).
Amey Rainaud – Junior – Burlington-Edison
Amey Rainaud has probably the best hands of the entire division as she showed last year, when she dished out 921 assists for State Championship fourth-placed Burlington-Edison. Her average of 10.1 assists per set is remarkable and earned her a nomination for the All-State second team. The 5’6” setter also had a great all-around game as she played an important role for the Tigers in both offense, with 67 aces and 45 kills, and defense, with 297 digs.
Danielle Faamausili – Junior – Steilacoom
A captain for Steilacoom, Danielle Faamausili did a great job in leading the Sentinels to a State Championship appearance last year. The 5’9” setter was fantastic with her ball distribution as the team’s four main hitters registered at least 120 kills during the season. Faamausili ended the season with a career-high 884 assists (9.8 per set) and also added 50 aces and 49 blocking points for her team, earning an All-State team honorable mention.
Katelyn Bland – Junior – Sammamish
Katelyn Bland played a hybrid role for Sammamish last year, splitting the setting duties with senior Ezabelle Alvarez and also hitting while at the net. She did well in both departments, registering 140 assists (three per set) for the Totems and using her 5’10” frame to be effective at the net, where she tallied 52 kills and 25 blocks. Her performance was rewarded with an All-State team honorable mention.
Raelyn Lowery – Senior – Highline
Another All-State team honorable mention nominee, Raelyn Lowery also split her time in the court between being a setter and hitter for Highline this past season. The 5’8” prospect led the Pirates in assists with 191 (4.2 per set) and also played a prominent role in the team’s offense, adding 126 points between kills (64), aces (54) and blocks (10).
