A good presence at the net is vital for teams willing to make deep runs in tournaments and these five schools will have some of the best in business at the Washington state Class 2B in the upcoming season.
Kierstyn York – Middle-Blocker – Senior – Colfax
Kierstyn York has played basketball, football and track and field for Colfax during her high school career, but she’s exceptional at volleyball. Playing as a middle-blocker, the six-footer took the Bulldogs to the seventh place at the State Championships last year. She’s a force on offense, routinely registering 15 kills or more, but was also important when blocking. The two skills took her to an All-State second-team selection.
Hailey Jones – Middle-Blocker – Senior – Ocosta
Hailey Jones was a wall at Ocosta’s net during the 2019 high school season. The Wildcats failed to make it to the State Championship, but were decently effective on blocking and Jones played a pivotal role in that success, registering 67 blocks over the course of the season, an average of 1.2 per set. At 5’10”, she’s quick enough to move at the net, which was made evident by her 31 assisted blocks.
Hailey Brooks – Middle-Blocker/Right Sider – Sophomore – Mossryrock
Splitting her time between middle-blocker and right sider duties, Hailey Brooks made a huge impact at Mossyrock’s program in her freshman year in 2019. The 5’8” player guided the Vikings to finish third in the division and was the team’s best blocker with 40 points scored at the net. She had an outstanding performance against Kalama, in which she registered unbelievable 14 blocks over three sets.
Katie Watkins– Middle-Blocker – Senior – LaConner
A State Championship winner with LaConner, Katie Watkins was one of the few starters of Braves not to receive an All-State team nod last season, but that didn’t diminish her role with the team at the net. The 5’9” middle-blocker ranked third in blocks in the entire roster with 29 and had several matches with multiple points scored at the net.
Jansi Merz – Middle-Blocker – Senior – Wahkiakum
Jansi Merz has been enjoying a solid high school career with Wahkiakum. The fix-foot middle-blocker has received back-to-back honorable mentions to the All-State team in the last two years and took the Lady Mules to a State Championship appearance in 2019 making use of her strong game at the net.
