The 2020 season of the Class 2B in Washington state should have top-level competition from start to finish and these five teams might be one step ahead of the other as they have some of the best setters in the division.
Madi Zorn – Junior – Northwest Christian
Madi Zorn was clearly among the best setters in the division last year when she led Northwest Christian to a State Championship final appearance. The 5’8” setter posted very impressive numbers in 2019, including 680 assists (7.2 per set), 140 digs, 107 aces and 80 kills and was selected to the All-State first team. One thing that sets Zorn apart from most setters of her age is her ability to operate with consistency even when her team is out-of-system, meaning virtually any set is hittable for the Crusaders.
Mariah Valencia – Senior – Tri-Cities Prep
Mariah Valencia was brilliant on her high school volleyball junior season as she helped Tri-Cities Prep in reaching the semifinals of the State Championship. The 5’5” setter, who also plays basketball and softball for the Jaguars, did a fine job in distributing the ball and organizing the team’s offense and, because of that, was part of the All-State second team.
Abigail Boesel – Sophomore – Brewster
Abigail Boesel did a tremendous job in leading Brewster to a State Championship appearance in her freshman year last season. The 5’6” setter was nothing short of impressive on her first season of high school volleyball and showed she’ll have prolific years with the Lady Bears after she handed out 700 assists to her teammates, averaging 8.4 per set. She also added 144 digs and 44 aces to her team during the campaign.
Alyvia Wright – Junior – Darrington
Darrington failed to appear at last year’s State Championship but Alyvia Wright managed to make her case as one of the best setters in the division even if she didn’t get to play in the big stage. With 342 assists dished out over 44 matches (7.8 per set), the 5’8” setter proved she as an elite-caliber player at the position and deservedly was included in the All-State team as an honorable mention.
Morgan Houghtelling – Senior – Mossyrock
Mossyrock’s third-place finish at last year’s State Championship had a huge contribution of Morgan Houghtelling. Even if she wasn’t an All-State team selection as libero Faith Mulligan or outside hitter Andee Nelson, the 5’7” setter precisely coordinated the team’s attacking system with 478 assists (7.5 per set) and also added 153 digs and 42 aces for the Vikings during her junior year.
