A good presence at the net is vital for teams willing to make deep runs in tournaments and these five schools will have some of the best in business at the Washington state Class 3A in the upcoming season.
Madison Nichols – Middle-Blocker – Senior – Capital
Madison Nichols was one of the great players who helped Capital appearing at last year’s State Championship final. Nichols was fantastic on offense and still managed to make a great impact when blocking at the net despite of her 5’8” frame, which put her in a size disadvantage with most of her opponents. Nichols registered 50 blocking points over the season and deservedly received an All-State first-team nomination for her play.
Sidney Patterson – Middle-Blocker – Senior – Chief Seattle
Blocking was Sidney Patterson’s main contribution to Chief Seattle during her junior season. The 5’11” middle-blocker did a great job at the net, denying Seahawks opponents 81 scoring opportunities, to an impressive average of two blocks per set. Patterson, who posted similar numbers in 2018, was stellar against Garfield tallying 15 blocks.
Eva Atkins – Middle-Blocker – Junior – Roosevelt
Eva Atkins formed an outstanding middle-blocker duo with senior Camille Duckett in a Roosevelt team that finished fourth in the division. The two were the Roughriders’ main scoring options and also did a great job in blocking, an area of the game in which the 6’3” Atkins thrived. The tall middle-blocker used her size and her reading to score 97 points at the net, averaging 1.1 per set, and earned an All-State team honorable mention.
Riley Clark – Middle-Blocker – Junior – Lakes
Riley Clark was a solid presence at the net for Lakes during the 2019 season. The Lancers might not have made it to the State Championship, but saw great development from their prospect as the then-sophomore improved her role with the team significantly. Her main contributions happened in blocking as she scored 61 points, averaging 1.4 per set.
McKenna Dorscht – Middle-Blocker – Senior – Seattle Prep
McKenna Dorscht was one of just two Seattle Prep players to receive All-State team honorable mentions in 2019, a season in which Panthers finished eighth at the State Championship. The six-foot middle-blocker certainly earned the award due to her highly-effective game at the net as she combined her excellent size with great timing and coordination, making of her a very efficient blocker.
