And although it looked a little different this year, there was a lot of talent showcased by new players.
University of Northwestern Team Camp: The Triton Cobras were able to take part in great team camp giving hope of a great year to come. In 2019 their team lost in the playoffs in a tough match-up with Kasson-Mantorville; thus, proving they have what it takes to be a top team in the state. Here are three new players that caught our eye and will likely give them a needed boost this season.
- Chloe Staub (2021 MH/RS; 5-11) Staub can put on a show with a variety of hits. Her hits out of the middle are quick and reach sharp angles as well as deep court. She has perfected her slide on the right side and uses her strength and speed to avoid blockers. On defense she does a nice job of closing the block to take away space and she can be utilized in the middle or on the right-side.
The Mustangs at Southwest State University always host a huge team camp for teams from all over. This year they were forced to cancel their camps but Stewartville’s ,John Dzubay, put together a make-shift camp for a few teams. Top new athletes included:
- Madison Meyer (2023 OH; Rochester Mayo) The incoming sophomore will be a great addition to the line up for the Spartans. She is quick at the net and has surprising power. Her experience playing with teammates Hannah Hanson and Kennedy Hady Kennedy Hady 5'8" | OH Rochester Mayo | 2021 State MN at Southern Minnesota Volleyball club will pay off.
- Kyle Smidt (2022 DS; Stewartville) A part of the state championship team, Smidt saw limited playing time alongside household names: Erin Lamb Erin Lamb 6'3" | MB Stewartville | 2021 State MN , Jolie Stecher Jolie Stecher 6'0" | MB Stewartville | 2021 State MN , and Jaidyn Brower Jaidyn Brower 5'8" | S Stewartville | 2021 State MN . She has however been one of the key substitutes in the past and looks to establish herself into a more substantial position this year.
- Tessa Erlandson (2023 OH; Kenyon Wanamingo) The Knights are under a new coach, Tracie Erlandson and she will rely on her daughter Tessa to bring youth, power, and precision to the line-up. Tessa is a dynamic player who’s skills are consistent from the back court to the front row. Expect her to be a big part of their serve receive and pack a punch at the service line too.
