In this series, we’ll dissect each of the state’s six divisions by analyzing the top teams and the most promising players and what we can expect from them when the balls are finally allowed to fly. As our series reaches its fourth week, it’s time to address Class 2B.
Walla Walla Valley Academy
The last three seasons haven’t been exactly promising for Walla Walla Valley Academy as the team won just one of the seven matches it played at the State Championships. If they didn’t produce the results, the last two campaigns were very important for the Knights to put together a team that’s capable of doing more next season, especially because of the presence of rising star outside hitter Sahara Browing.
Their three key players are:
Sahara Browing – Outside Hitter – Junior
Sahara Browing made an immediate impact at Walla Walla Valley Academy being the team’s second-best scorer in 2018 and leading the team in that department last season, when she tallied 348 kills and earned a second-straight All-State team honorable mention. The 5’8” outside hitter also produces in bunches in other areas as she registered 94 aces, 21 blocks, 232 digs and 66 passes for the Knights last season.
Macyn Scherger – Setter – Senior
Macy Scherger is the bow and the arrow on Walla Walla Valley Academy’s offensive system. The team’s main setter, the five-footer led the Knights in assists with 258, but was also aggressive enough despite her limited size to rank third in kills with 70. An effective defender with 112 digs, Scherger was also lethal form the service line, adding 64 aces for the Knights in 2019.
Jessica Mitchell – Middle-Blocker – Senior
A 5’9” middle-blocker, Jessica Mitchell was Walla Walla Valley Academy’s second-best scorer in 2019, a season in which she had a career-high 92 kills. She was also the team’s third-best middle-blocker with 19 blocks and had impressive 45 aces, but perhaps her most meaningful contribution came in an unusual way for a player of her position as she led the Knights in both digs (267) and passes (70), showing a well-polished all-around game.
