First we broke the players down by division and then we switched gears to analyze who are expected to be the most outstanding athletes in the top teams of each of those divisions.
For the next several weeks, we’ll dive even deeper, taking a closer look at each of the 46 district leagues in the state of Washington and pointing out the players we believe will be worth your attention in the near future.
The 2A KingCo District features seven high schools and their three best players are:
Katelyn Bland – Setter/Right Sider – Junior – Sammamish
Sammamish found a great way to maximize each of Katelyn Bland’s multiple skills last season by deploying the 5’10” prospect as a hybrid of setter and right sider. That put her in a position to make her teammates’ lives easier by handing out 140 assists, but also allowed her to make good use of her hitting skills for the Totems, registering 52 kills during the season – she also had 25 blocks and 29 aces. Bland was included in the All-State team as an honorable mention and also made it to the All-League second team.
Alana Gaalema – Outside Hitter/Libero/Setter – Senior – Highline
Scoring points for Highline wasn’t that difficult for Alana Gaalema last season. The 5’7” outside hitter isn’t the tallest or most physical hitter, but her technical skills are above average, which allows how to also play as libero or even a setter, proving her team with great flexibility. Gaalema led the Pirates in points with 95 – having three double-digit performances in 2019 – but also contributed significantly with her serving to a team-high 58 aces and added 11 blocks.
Marina Lieato – Setter/Right Sider – Junior – Foster
When a player ends a season with triple digits in such different skills as setting and hitting, it’s clear the impact they have on their teams. Marina Lieato was one kill (99) short from the mark, as she registered 200 assists for Foster, but she’s obviously the Bulldogs go-to player. The 5’7” prospect excelled when splitting her time between setter and right sider duties and also contributed with a team-high 57 aces and 26 digs.
