First, we broke the players down by division and then we switched gears to analyze who are expected to be the most outstanding athletes in the top teams of each of those divisions.
For the next several weeks, we’ll dive even deeper, taking a closer look at each of the 46 district leagues in the state of Washington and pointing out the players we believe will be worth your attention in the near future.
It’s time to look at the 3A Pierce County district, which has seven high schools and their three best players are:
Shaleese Nuckols – Libero – Senior – Wilson
Defensive stability was one of Wilson’s main assets in 2019 and much of it was due to Shaleese Nuckols’ presence in the team’s backcourt. The 5’3” was a stabilizing force for the Rams with her great technique, smart positioning, admirable work ethic and impressive leadership skills. She delivered in numbers too, leading the team in digs (253) and passes (300) besides contributing with 19 aces.
Charlise Johansen – Setter – Junior – Stadium
Charlise Johansen was one of the reasons behind the success of Stadium’s two-setter system in 2019. The 5’6” prospect split the setting duties with Mia Naccarato and provided the Lady Tigers with the offensive strategy they needed, handing out 273 assists, to an impressive average of 9.1 per set. She also brought some value to her on defense, registering 74 digs during the season.
Noelani McGivern – Outside Hitter – Senior – Spanaway Lake
Noelani McGivern has made an impact in Spanaway Lake’s volleyball team since her freshman season, but her offensive production had a huge leap in 2019. Last year, the 5’8” outside hitter became the Sentinels’ go-to scoring option, ending the season with 193 kills – and double-digit performances in that area in 13 of the 16 matches she played at. McGivern also helped the team in other departments, registering 21 aces, 147 digs and 126 passes.
