However, we know one of the reasons why many of you follow high school volleyball is to try and anticipate which prospects have what it takes to succeed at the collegiate level and beyond. So, in this series, we’ll share our best guesses and list the top student-athletes from each of the next three graduating classes in each State district.
As we look at the East portion of the South Central Athletic Conference, here are our picks:
Class of 2021
Alyssa Radke – Middle-Blocker – Connell
Alyssa Radke is hands down the best player from the best team in the district. The Connell product was the only in the entire district to be included in the All-State second team and was also the League’s Co-Player of the Year. The six-foot middle-blocker certainly did more than enough to deserve those awards as she capped off her junior season with the Eagles as the team’s top-scorer (184 kills), server (42 aces) and defender (145 digs) and ranking second in blocks (36) and passes (176).
Class of 2022
Elyzza Gonzales – Setter/Outside Hitter – Kiona-Benton
Physical attributes are certainly important in any sport, but with good technique and a great understanding of the game, anyone can play volleyball at a high level. That’s the case with Kiona-Benton’s Elyzza Gonzales, who established herself as a key piece for the Lady Bears despite of her 5’2” frame. Capable of playing as either a setter or an outside hitter, Gonzales is a crafty and smart player, one of those who are a joy to watch. Her incredible talent and versatility took her to the All-League second-team member for a second-straight year in 2019.
Class of 2023
Taylere Nelson – Middle-Blocker – Kiona-Benton
Having the right size and appropriate physical tools is a good start for any young, up-and-coming middle-blocker and Taylere Nelson is not falling behind in that department. The 5’10” prospect had limited opportunities to play in a strong Kiona-Benton program in her freshman season, but the same competitive level that prevented her from getting more playing time in her first season of high school volleyball it what will make her develop to the best of her abilities in the next three years with the Lady Bears.
