However, we know one of the reasons why many of you follow high school volleyball is to try and anticipate which prospects have what it takes to succeed at the collegiate level and beyond. So, in this series, we’ll share our best guesses and list the top student-athletes from each of the next three graduating classes in each State district.
Today’s subject is the 1B Coastal District and here are our picks:
Class of 2021
Morgan Houghtelling – Setter – Mossyrock
There’s no good team without a good setter and that’s certainly one of the reasons why Mossyrock managed to end 2019 with a third-place finish at the 2B class State Championships. The Vikings had one of the best in the business quarterbacking their offensive actions in Morgan Houghtelling, a 5’7” prospect with buttery hands that dished out as many as 478 assists to her teammates last season. She went beyond to help the team with 42 aces and 153 digs and was rewarded with an All-League second-team nomination for the 2B Central district in which the Vikings played last season.
Class of 2022
Lanissa Amacher – Setter – Willapa Valley
Willapa Valley is expected to put up a good fight with Mossyrock after they dominated the 2B Pacific District with nine wins in nine matches last season and the Vikings certainly won’t lag behind their opponents in the setter department. Also a basketball student-athlete, Lanissa Amacher has all the tools to be a standout in the position, including her 5’8” frame, and we strongly indicated she’s on her way to do so with a solid 2019 campaign that took her to the All-State team as an honorable mention and secured her a spot in the All-League first team.
Class of 2023
Payton Torrey – Outside Hitter – Mossyrock
Payton Torrey was a much-welcomed addition to Mossyrock as a freshman in 2019. The 5’9” outside hitter plays taller than she is and had an immediate adjustment to the team, providing the Vikings an interesting offensive spark at the pin. Torrey, who’s also a track and field student-athlete, managed to significantly contribute to her team’s success in several areas, most notably with the second-best mark of 145 kills, 37 aces, 214 digs and 197 passes. She was included in the All-League second team in her first year of high school volleyball.
