However, we know one of the reasons why many of you follow high school volleyball is to try and anticipate which prospects have what it takes to succeed at the collegiate level and beyond. So, in this series, we’ll share our best guesses and list the top student-athletes from each of the next three graduating classes in each State district.
This is the 1B Columbia Valley District and these are our picks:
Class of 2021
Katie Kogler– Middle-Blocker – Firm Foundation
Katie Kogler is not only the best player in the 2021 class, she’s also the best player in the entire district. The six-foot has been a rock for Firm Foundation since she landed in the program and it was no different in 2019, when she led the Lady Eagles to win all their eight matches in the district. Kogler’s game at the net is typically too much for opponents to handle as her 389 kills and 79 blocks (which were both more than what all of her teammates produced combined) showed last season. She also tallied 56 aces and that explosive combination earned her the district’s Most Valuable Player Award and a spot in the All-State second team.
Class of 2022
Pervie Reed – Libero – Three Rivers Christian
Three Rivers Christian could be proud of having arguably the district’s most efficient defensive system last season and props to Pervie Reed for leading the team’s backcourt efforts. The then second-year libero stepped up big time and led the team in that department with outstanding 324 digs. The defender, who also added 64 aces for the Eagles, was frequently her team’s best player on the court and that was reflected in the post-season awards as the 5’2” Reed was part of the All-State team as an honorable mention and also made it to the All-League first team.
Class of 2023
Elsa Helmes – Middle-Blocker/Defensive Specialist – Firm Foundation
Not many players have the ability to play at a high level as middle-blocker or defensive specialist but Elsa Helmes is one of them. The 5’5” prospect offered great value for Firm Foundation as a two-way player last season, being prolific on offense with 123 kills but even better on the other side of the ball with the impressive defensive numbers of 231 passes and a team-high 250 digs. Her versatility was certainly a great asset for the Lady Eagles and it took Helmes to be an All-League first-team selection last season.
