The first week of competition will bring a handful of can’t-miss matches and as we understand it’s a lot to process, especially with two seasons separated by just a few months, between now and next Wednesday we’ll recommend one match for you to follow every day, highlighting the teams involved and their most exciting prospects.
This is our suggestion for Thursday, September 2:
Colville vs Northport – 3.00pm
Colville wasn’t brilliant in the last high school season, winning just three out of their ten matches, but with the talent level the Indians have on their roster, it’s easy to see the doing better this time around despite the graduation of a couple of important seniors.
Northport, on the other hand, ranked better in the division last season with eight victories and only three setbacks. The Mustangs will need to retool their team a little bit after missing four seniors, including the team’s top two scorers from last season, but seem to have the right pieces to not miss a step.
Players to Watch – Colville
McKenna Reggear – Middle Blocker – 2022
McKenna Reggear had to step up her game last season as the Indians faced a heavy overturn and she couldn’t have responded better to the challenge, becoming the team’s most dominant player at the net. The 5’11” middle blocker, who also plays basketball for the school, had an extremely productive season, leading the Indians in kills (63), blocks (45) and aces (17). She also ranked second in digs (64) and passes (93) showing a really complete game and making it to the all-league second team.
Ashne’a Anderson – Setter/Right Sider – Club: Panorama Juniors – 2022
Ashne’a Anderson is another player whose game flourished in a more central role with Colville last season. Given the starting role, the 5’8” setter did a terrific job with her distribution, ending the season with 80 assists. Anderson also spent some time scoring points on her own, ranking second in kills, just behind Reggear, with 28. She was also the team’s top defender with 68 digs and contributed significantly at the net, with 15 blocks, and from the service line, with 16 aces.
Players to Watch – Northport
Olivia Corcoran – Setter/Right Sider – 2024
Northport’s second-best scorer last season, Kylie Corcoran will be one of the most noticeable absences after she graduated, but young sister Olivia has showed she can pick up the team’s scoring load. Splitting time between setting and hitting duties, the 5’7” Olivia ranked third in kills fort eh Mustangs last season, registering 43 kills. She also exceled when setting her teammates up, with 48 assists, and contributed in other areas, adding 34 aces and 29 digs.
Belle Stark – Right Sider – 2023
Sisterhood is quite a big deal in Northport as Belle Stark will also try to follow the footsteps of her graduated sister Eliza, who was the team’s top scorer last season. Playing as a right sider, Belle showed some promise last season, registering 22 kills, 36 aces, 11 blocks and 19 digs. Her game is still a work in progress, but standing at six-foot, she has the potential to make a massive impact for the Mustangs this season.
