Here it is! The last position group left to cover is setters as we conclude our overview of Nebraska’s stat leaders from the 2021 season.

Those who have been following the high school volleyball scene around Nebraska are surely aware of the state’s great setter talent. We saw a lot of records get broken this year, and many of these trailblazing setters capped off their seasons (and careers) in the state tournament.

Let’s give some recognition to a few names that hovered near the top of the assists leaderboard throughout the year.

Star Seniors

Of course, we can’t do this feature without giving a shoutout to a few of the graduating senior setters that made a massive impact throughout their careers.

[player_tooltip player_id="58781" first="Madi" last="Woodin"] will take her talents to South Dakota after racking up mind-numbing totals during her time with Elkhorn South. Her placement near the top of this year’s assists hierarchy is not an anomaly; she’s been doing this for a long time!

While Woodin led the state in assists per set, [player_tooltip player_id="37531" first="Abby" last="Schomers"] emerged as the overall leader in total assists accumulated over the 2021 season. Her ascent to the top was aided by a few absolutely brilliant performances that this senior had for Skutt en route to another state championship. Schomers will head to Central Florida next year and is yet another spectacular Nebraska talent to join the Knights program.

[player_tooltip player_id="37529" first="Ava" last="LeGrand"] is another state championship within this group of top seniors. The Kansas State-bound star directed one of Nebraska’s most efficient offenses in 2021, and it was only fitting that the Titans wrapped up an undefeated season under her leadership.

We’ve already mentioned Schomers, but Class B was full of trendsetters that have been dominating for a long time. [player_tooltip player_id="37546" first="Maisie" last="Boesiger"] was an indispensable part of Norris’ runs to state title matches over the years. [player_tooltip player_id="58796" first="Hannah" last="Allick"] also had a breakout season for Waverly and helped lead the Vikings to the Class B semifinals.

The Next Wave

While the very top of the assists count is dominated by familiar names, there are some emerging stars that are poised to lead the next wave of setting prodigies in Nebraska.

We’ve already mentioned Adi Rennerfeldt a few times, and this freshman setter already has a state championship on her docket in addition to being one of Nebraska’s most prolific players in the assists column.

Here’s a reminder on another freshman setter who had a productive debut year: Omaha Marian’s [player_tooltip player_id="155046" first="Isabel" last="Campie"]. "Izzy" dishes it like a veteran and will surely help Marian’s upward trajectory in the coming seasons.

The sophomore class is similarly loaded. [player_tooltip player_id="109586" first="Reagan" last="Hickey"] and [player_tooltip player_id="109593" first="Reese" last="Booth"] were among the state leaders in assists for the entire 2021 season, and their ability to put their hitters in great spots will keep them near the top. Great 2024 setters populate just about every class in the state, too; [player_tooltip player_id="104674" first="Carolyn" last="Maser"], Keira Hennerberg, and [player_tooltip player_id="105005" first="Ashlyn" last="Florell"] were impact players who all made postseason appearances.

Of course, next year’s seniors will also be fun to watch. [player_tooltip player_id="104588" first="Skylar" last="Walters"] finished in the statewide top ten in assists after she helped Millard West to a runner-up finish in Class A. Down in Lincoln, [player_tooltip player_id="59205" first="Adison" last="Markowski"] is still racking up assists for a Pius X team that should continue to improve.
