From Green Bay to Louisville, talent gathers every weekend with young athletes consistently making their names known. With that in mind, I wanted to highlight some of the most dynamic middle blockers I’ve seen recently. These three have such a high ceiling and hold so much promise as young middle blockers.
Audrey Nelson – 2024 – 6’0 – Middle Blocker – Madison (SD) – Pentagon 16 Orange
Nelson is absolutely explosive, sees the block, and cuts great angles. She is a powerful middle blocker for Pentagon, but I could see Nelson impacting a match in a number of ways. Nelson has a big influence at the net with the ability to hit a quick set in the middle and providing a powerful authority on the defensive side. She can stress out opposing attackers, causing a number of unforced errors.
Madeline Muellner Madeline Muellner 5'11" | MB Forest Lake | 2024 State MN – 2024 – 5’11 – Middle Blocker – Forest Lake (MN) – Kokoro 16-1
Muellner is a dynamic and physical player who can terminate from anywhere on the net. She takes a big swing at the angles and brings a ton of energy to the game. You can see her team’s demeanor change when she rotates into the front row, and it’s hard to get past her intense blocking presence. Muellner makes really smart shot selections to keep the play alive or terminate for points.
Riley Samuel – 2024 – 5’11 – Middle Blocker – Oakland Catholic (PA) – Revolution PGH 16 White
Samuel has such a high contact point that she is going over most blockers and she does a really nice job hitting the back line and working the corners. She plays with such composure you would not believe it’s her first year playing club. Samuel is long and uses her incredible wingspan to control the net on defense and establish her aggressive style of play. She’s a key player for Revolution and I can’t wait to see how she develops with the continued experience.
