A three-day tournament at Pearce Sports Center in San Bernardino started on July 19 and ended on the 21st. It will continue next week from July 25th to the 27th. There are so many players from different schools who participated in this event. It is an opportunity to get high school players ready for their upcoming season. Some girls who normally play with each other on the same side of the court in club are now playing against each other and it was a fun sight to see. High schools from different areas and conferences filled the Pearce Sports Center this week with great talent.

The conclusion of GJNC at the beginning of this month closed the door on one season and a new door was opened with high school. Many schools began their tryouts as soon as Nationals finished and fifteen days later we are now watching players in their element of volleyball once again. One thing about club and high school players, it doesn’t stop for those student athletes. Meet some student athletes who transitioned straight from club into high school and should be on the radar for this upcoming high school season.

Kailani Caloca (2023) | 5’6 L/DS | Citrus Valley HS/Lava

Kailani Caloca is a libero who stayed ready to defend any ball coming her way. Her ability to make effective passes defense or offense wise helped her team get may opportunities to score. She is not afraid to get down for a ball and did what was needed to do to keep a ball in play. Caloca has a good serve and is capable of getting many aces with low errors. She reads the court easily which makes defending and receiving come with ease.

Macy Kavanaugh (2023) | 5’9 S | Serrano HS/Tstreet IE

Macy Kavanaugh’s hands are smooth which helped her place the ball in effective positions for her attackers. She is quick on the court which makes it easy for her to get to an off pass and still deliver a little to no spin set. Kavanaugh did not hesitate to make plays for her pins and with the different variations of sets Kavanaugh had to offer it helped her avoid setting into the block. She ran her teams offense with communication and good energy on the court. Kavanaugh is fast and agile making it possible to get to the ball from different areas of the court.

Allyson Shim (2023) | 5’11 MB | Ontario Christian HS/Tstreet IE

Allyson Shim has the speed and agility which helps her get to any set provided by her setter. She is the first line of defense moving easily without trying to predict where the ball goes and she still manages to put up a solid block. She is able to read the directions of the sets and where they are going which helps her block easily. Shim is controlled and balanced not jumping into the net but jumping straight up in front of the net putting up strong hands. She helps her pin hitters block without drifting into them, which keeps her teammates safe. When faced with a quick set, Shim delivers.

Madison Baker (2023) | 5’9 OH/OPP | Ontario Christian HS/Tstreet IE

Madison "Madi" Baker is a player who has a strong hit downline and cross court. She can hit through the block with her strong arm. She is able to jump and create an effective block at the net. Baker, despite the looks of a previous knee injury she was able to deliver and took many good shots from the outside. She is a player who mostly aims for high hands which helped her succeed in tooling the blocks and scoring. She looked for holes and is a smart player placing the ball where the opponents left open.

[player_tooltip player_id=’207937’ first=’Isabel’ last=’Wold’] (2024) | 5’2 S | Hillcrest HS/Rancho Valley

[player_tooltip player_id=’207937’ first=’Isabel’ last=’Wold’] is tiny but mighty at her position. She is quick and able to get to the second ball anywhere on the court. Her defense is amazing and not to be underestimated. She is not afraid to dive and dig a ball, saving it from hitting the ground. Wold is quick and hustle ever time she’s on the court. When she dives for a ball and pops it up, Wold quickly gets back on her feet before another player can touch the ball. Her sets are controlled and can go high, low, or quick depending on her hitter’s preference. Wold doesn’t hesitate to get to a ball, and the way she runs her offense shows that she is deserving of her captain title.

Marlee Arrington (2024) | 6’0 OH/OPP | Ontario Christian HS/Tstreet IE

Marlee Arrington has a high IQ of the game by adjusting to sets in which she could score with a kill or tip. She is a strong outside and right-side hitter who delivers when it’s needed the most. She has a quick approach to the net and is a strong blocker up front. With a big block in front of her, she played fearlessly and swung at every opportunity she got. Even though she played fearlessly, don’t mistake her for being reckless. She is a smart player tipping the ball where the court was open. Arrington was one of the main attackers who contributed to the teams winning success.

[player_tooltip player_id=’179339’ first=’Saniyah’ last=’Sobers’] (2025) | 5’6 OH/L | Redlands HS/Rancho Valley

Photo: April Sobers The photo was taken by her mother, it is not published anywhere.

[player_tooltip player_id=’179339’ first=’Saniyah’ last=’Sobers’] is an OH 6 rotation player with great defense because of her skills and experience as a club libero. She can hit with power and her high vertical allows her to get on top of the ball. Sobers is fast and agile, being able to change directions and still maintain her speed. She is explosive on the court with her approach and back row defense. She can also jump high enough to block or slow down the ball from her opponents. Sobers communicates well and brings great energy on the court which shows her leadership as a player.

Sabri Johnson (2025) | 5’7 OH/DS | Ontario Christian HS/PAC Beach Volleyball

Sabri Johnson’s career changed from indoor to strictly beach outside of high school. Since being a beach player, it has forced her to work on all her skills of hitting, blocking, and setting. This makes for a well-rounded, adaptable player. Johnson can read the game and anticipate plays. Although I only saw Johnson play backrow, she is very capable of being an aggressive front row player. Her vertical helps her see over the block which contributes to her smart placement of the ball.

A great way to support our volleyball athletes and teams is by sharing our stories with family, friends, and fans.
