Over the next four months, prospects will store their club team uniforms in their closets and will represent their high schools with the goal of getting to the end of the year as the new state champions.
The state of Texas has one of the largest high school seasons in the entire country with the University Interscholastic League (UIL) managing a tournament for public schools that features six divisions, 192 districts and as many as 1,207 high school teams.
The start date for the 2022-2023 season is August 8 and between now and then, we’re previewing some of the districts located in the Houston area, highlighting their teams and most promising prospects.
In the last piece of the series, let’s look at Division 6A – District 24:
Brazoswood
The Lady Buccaneers were in the middle of the pack in district 24 last season, finishing fourth after they won six of their 12 matches. The 2022-2023 season will mark the start of a new era for the team with the graduation of star middle blocker Emma Williams. Outside hitters Reagan Blank and Madison Varga and middle blocker Landrie Heble have shown they can pick up the slack in terms of scoring, but compensating for the departures of libero Madie Johnson and setter Ella Mulholland may be more complicated, although the playmaker’s younger sister Olivia is coming from a strong season.
Dickinson
The Lady Gators did well enough to rank fifth in district 24 last season, when they won five matches and lost seven. The team will have a challenge in replacing the senior-heavy roster led by middle blocker Brandolyn Freeman, setter Elaina Spriggings and right side Madison Spells. Outside hitter Caroline Boone and libero Addison Stanley had solid seasons in 2021-2022 and will be instrumental in leading the team in the upcoming season.
Clear Brook
The Lady Wolverines will enter 2022-2023 looking to rebound from their last year’s campaign, which saw they rank seventh (and last) in district 24 with a single win in 12 matches. Clear Brook has a young roster and is more than right to expect improvement over the years, especially coming from outside hitters Olivia Hines and Kailyn Hitch and middle blocker Thompson Kennedy.
Clear Creek
The Lady Wildcats were a force in the division last season, when they won 11 of their 12 matches to finish at the top of district 24 and compete in the playoffs. A repeat seems unlikely after most of their key players graduated – middle blocker Reaghan Thompson, right side Bella Woodard, outside hitter Brooke Morgan, libero Briana Zamora and setter Emma Boland. Clear Creek has promising players in several with outside hitters Stratton Sneed Stratton Sneed 5'11" | RS Clear Creek | 2023 State TX and Olivia Jones, libero Mia Sauers and setter Daisy Mitchell and if they click together, good things could happen.
Clear Falls
The Lady Knights were third in district 24 last season after they came out on top in eight of their 12 matches. Middle blockers Nicole Sherfield and Kade Thomas and outside hitter Krysta Boaz will be missed after graduation and the transfer of star setter/right side Kirra Musgrove Kirra Musgrove 6'2" | S Lutheran South Academy | 2025 State #12 Nation TX , a player Clear Falls could build around for years to come, to Lutheran South Academy is another tough blow. Outside hitter Grace Stum, middle blocker Brittney Daphnis Brittney Daphnis 5'11" | RS Clear Falls | 2023 TX , setter Michelle Goodnight and libero Ashlyn German will be key players in the team’s campaign in 2022-2023.
Clear Lake
The Lady Falcons will try to recover from a frustrating 2021-2022 campaign that saw them win a single district 24 match to rank sixth in the standings. Clear Lake will have three key players to replace in outside hitter Emma Norman, middle blocker Hannah Azbell and libero Alanna Jochim, but also have interesting players who will get more playing time like middle blockers Annie Cathey and Kaylee Cannatella and setters Logan Bess and Chloe Beck.
Clear Springs
Last year’s district 24 runner-ups with ten wins in 12 matches, the Lady Chargers will be determined to try and climb another step and finish at the top of the division this time. To do that, they will have to deal with the absences of the graduated Grace King (outside hitter), Arion Keeton (outside hitter), Kaitlyn Johnson (middle blocker) and Tali Lew (libero). One of the keys for Clear Springs will be the connection between setter Morgan Durgens and right sides Ashley Richardson Ashley Richardson 5'11" | S Clear Springs | 2024 State TX and Carissa Young.
