It’s no secret that prep players tend to make a big jump from their freshman to sophomore years. For some, sophomore year is the first chance to get a taste of varsity action. That will undoubtedly yield more athletes for our next 2025 rankings update, so stay tuned.
This feature will hone in on a few more names that are likely to make a big jump in Nebraska’s 2025 hierarchy this fall. Time to get amped up for some high school volleyball.
It didn’t take long for Elkhorn North to find a foothold atop the Class B volleyball landscape. Players like Heaney have helped propel this new program into serious title contention after the Wolves made the semifinal round a year ago. This 15 Gold outside hitter found her form this spring, and it won’t hurt to have older sister Grace on her side, either.
Not many people were blindsided by the stat-stuffing freshman season Traudt had for Grand Island last year. Her high-level play with VCN has held our attention for a while, and now the Islanders could get even more from their sophomore sensation in 2022.
Setting an offense as a freshman is undoubtedly a daunting task, but Nebraska has a few 2025s who took on this challenge last season. Campie was one of those players, and she helped guide Omaha Marian through a tough fall slate full of talented opponents. The Crusaders are more experienced in 2022 and are in good shape with Campie leading the way.
Heckenlively was undoubtedly one of the most prolific freshman middle blockers in the state last year. It’s a position that’s often tough for young players, but Gretna got so much offensive production from this upstart 2025. When you factor in the great ball control that the Dragons always have, you can expect Heckenlively to get plenty more attacking opportunities as a sophomore.
Omaha Duchesne is always a force to be reckoned with when it’s tournament time. Layson has a chance to carry the Cardinals even further up the championship bracket this year after putting together an impressive club campaign with Nebraska Elite. Her physicality and power will fit right in with the vast array of other talented attackers in Class B.
Kamery is one of the most intriguing players in Nebraska’s 2025 class. I’d argue that setter is her native position, but this multi-talented athlete did so well as a left-side attacker for Nebraska ONE this year. Perhaps that’s indicative of Kamery’s willingness to do anything to help her team. She will surely give that same all-around effort to Minden when the Whippets take the court in a few weeks.
Highlights
You know the drill. Omaha Skutt Catholic is back to defend its state title. Last year’s triumph marked the seventh-consecutive championship for the SkyHawks, and now the storied program will lean on some young talent to extend the streak. Link is a name to know in that group, and the middle blocker will likely take another step forward after building some nice momentum during the club season.
Speaking of state championships, Rennerfeldt took the reins of Oakland-Craig’s setter spot and lifted the Knights to a historic victory in the Class C2 title match. A few new faces will surround the sophomore setter this fall, but Rennerfeldt’s skill and finesse make any hitter better. Keep this small-town talent on your radar.
