The idea is to do things a little bit differently this year, so after every match I attend, I’ll be posting a quick article highlighting the players that stood out the most in that particular encounter.
On Friday, September 23, we stopped by to watch the non-district match between Episcopal and the Woodlands. Two powerhouses in their own leagues, the two teams battled in Houston and the Hilanders prevailed in three sets (25-18, 32-30, 25-10) to improve to 29-8 in the University Interscholastic League (UIL). The Knights, who compete in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS), now stand at 23-7.
Top Performers
The Woodlands’ star outside hitter had a nearly flawless match, producing well in every aspect of the game. Lewis felt extremely comfortable on the court and she did a great job with her passing, leading the team with 17. She was also very effective with her defense, leaving the court with 16 digs to her name. Offensively, Lewis displayed excellent decision-making and resources, scoring a match-high 12 points and going from hard-driven hits to technical, intelligent shots.

The senior setter had another display of her importance to the team by producing in a variety of ways in her double duty. Dewine was great with her ball distribution, accurately feeding her main hitters to register 18 assists, but also stood out on offense with nine kills, the third-best mark on the team, some of them in key moments. She came up big when the Hilanders needed her, making some of her 13 digs in consecutive plays to help the team improve its lead in the opening set, and ending the closely-contested second set with one of her four blocks.
Marjorie Johnson

The physical middle blocker put on an extremely productive performance, quietly producing big numbers for her team. Johnson had no easy night with two excellent middles coming against her, but she held her own, shining with her offense and blocking. She left the match with ten kills, only behind Lewis, and four blocks, tying Dewine’s production at the net.
Episcopal’s physical middle blocker made her presence felt at the net the entire time. Much more athletic than her opponents across the net, she used her physical tools to dominate the net and make a big impact on both sides of the ball. Harrington was unstoppable offensively at times and created a lot of problems to The Woodlands’ hitters with her big and aggressive blocking.

Episcopal’s skilled outside hitter didn’t have an easy night, being targeted by several serves, but she handled most of them fairly well. She was set out-of-system quite often and if one hand she didn’t put the ball down that many times, she also didn’t make many mistakes. Poirot showed great hustle on the backcourt, recovering some incredible balls, and had her moments in serving and defense.
